Steve Hammil, MA

Counselor/Therapist

I believe the best counseling begins with you feeling understood and ends when you feel liberated. It also acknowledges the paradox of change - we want to change, but we also want to stay the same. If we accept this ambivalence as natural we come to trust our core self and so are freed to move on.

Steve Hammil Practice Description

I believe in resolving the underlying problems that lead to depression, anxiety, and other emotional and physiological issues. This means that you will require less or no medication as well as not becoming dependent on counseling. I use a tiered approach that begins with helping you feel and function better as quickly as possible. This usually involves addressing problems and symptoms first. Then, if you wish, a second phase is initiated that aims to identify and understand your coping mechanisms and defensive strategies that are often self-limiting and get in the way of you achieving your goals. This understanding allows for the identification of deep emotional hurts that have resulted in negative stories and beliefs about your very value and sense of self. Healing occurs as we focus on increasing your feeling of power to influence and author your life; change toxic views of your self; resolvie painful conflicts; and increase your capacity to engage in deep, authentic connection with others.
