According to Statistics Canada, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) affects 3-5% of school-aged children. This means one out of 25-30 student meets the criteria for this diagnosis. According to researchers and child mental health professionals, ADHD leads to poor school performance, conduct disorders, and interpersonal difficulties in family and friendships. While researchers continue studying what causes ADHD, the following possible theories have been identified as contributors to this condition: environmental factors, brain injury, diet, and genetics. Since there is no consensus among scientists as what causes ADHD; whether it’s social factors, parenting skills, or neurobiological factors and genetics, parents should not feel guilty and blame themselves for their child’s behavior. Instead, they should focus on finding the best possible way to help their child.

While in certain cases medication is considered as an effective treatment for ADHD, psychotherapy, behavioral therapy and emotional counseling are also considered effective in the treatment of ADHD. Visiting a behavioral child therapist will provide an opportunity for the child and his/her parents to educate themselves about this condition and learn new coping skills to manage ADHD. Behavioral therapy can also help individuals learn new behaviors to improve self-esteem and self-confidence and learn how to deal with the emotional impacts of ADHD.
