I am a relational and interpersonal therapist, meaning I seek to create a mutual space where we can explore how your relationship with the world affects your relationships with others as well as yourself. I believe you are the expert in your own lived experiences, and that therapy is a collaborative process where we can explore those experiences together. In our sessions, I cultivate a warm, non-judgmental space where you can feel comfortable showing up as you are, with room for discussion and open feedback.

Treatment Approach

  • Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT) Helps people accept difficult thoughts and feelings instead of fighting them, while committing to actions that reflect their values. It blends mindfulness with practical behavior strategies.
  • Behavioral Therapy Uses learning techniques like reinforcement and practice to change unwanted behaviors. It is often applied to phobias, anxiety, and habits.
  • Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) Combines CBT with mindfulness to help regulate emotions, tolerate stress, and build stronger relationships. Originally designed for borderline personality disorder, it’s now used more broadly.
  • Eclectic Therapy Draws from different therapeutic methods based on what fits each client best. It is flexible and personalized rather than following one single model.
  • Existential / Humanistic Therapy Encourages people to explore meaning, freedom, and authenticity in their lives. It focuses on personal growth and living in alignment with one’s values.
  • Feminist Therapy Addresses how gender roles, power, and social inequality affect mental health. It empowers clients to challenge limiting beliefs and systems.
  • Internal Family Systems (IFS) Helps clients heal by working with different ‘parts’ of themselves, like inner critics or wounded children. It fosters harmony within the self.
  • Interpersonal Therapy (IPT) A short-term approach focused on improving relationships and social support. It is often used for depression and grief.
  • Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) Combines mindfulness practices with CBT to prevent depression relapse. It helps people notice thoughts without judgment and respond more calmly.
  • Motivational Interviewing (MI) A collaborative, client-centered approach that strengthens motivation for change. It is especially effective for addictions and health behaviors.
  • Multicultural Therapy Acknowledges the role of culture, race, and identity in mental health. It values diversity and adapts treatment to each person’s background.
  • Narrative Therapy Encourages people to view problems as separate from themselves and reframe their life story. It helps build resilience and self-identity.
  • Person-Centered Therapy (Rogerian) Emphasizes empathy, unconditional positive regard, and authenticity. It provides a safe space for self-discovery and growth.
  • Psychodynamic Therapy Explores unconscious thoughts and patterns that influence current behavior. It builds insight into how the past impacts the present.
  • Relational Psychotherapy Emphasizes the healing power of the therapist-client relationship. It uses trust and safety as a foundation for change.
Approach Description: I practice from an interpersonal psychodynamic perspective, incorporating principles of Internal Family Systems (IFS) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). I have experience working in crisis counseling as well as individual therapy. I have worked with clients on issues such as anxiety, depression, complex trauma, dissociation, grief, identity, family relationships, dysphoria, gender affirming medical care, and the ways in which our identities interact with society at large.

Elise Mai-Rose Practice Description
I offer sessions that are client focused and curious. In our sessions, we co-create a space with compassion, creativity and humor to foster an environment where you can feel both safe and challenged to grow. I practice with a psychodynamic relational approach that is trauma-informed and socially aware of power and privilege, critical of psychological paradigms that pathologize suffering. I specialize in working with queer and trans clients with a particular focus on trauma, dissociation, and grief. I ground my work in an anti-oppressive and queer-affirming approach that acknowledges the many experiences we bring on both an individual and societal level. I believe that therapy should be a space for you to show up exactly as you are. Together we can explore the many different ways your past and present experiences have shaped who you are and inform who you wish to become. My approach is person-centered, and grounded in an openness to your journey and the meaning you make of it.
