I am trained to use many different techniques, focusing on more than 1 problem at a time and treating the emotion and consequential behaviour rather than the disorder itself. The goal is for you to become your own therapist in order to achieve longterm gain and to reduce the need to access further help in the future. Of course, if this is required, top up sessions are always available. I focus on your strengths and abilities to solve your problem ( which we forget when we experience distress) and work knowing that you are the expert in your life. My role is to facilitate the process of achieving your goals in a safe and non-judgemental environment. My practice is centred on the philosophies and principles of Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy founded by Albert Elllis in the 1950s. The Albery Ellis Institute has more information about him and the concepts of REBT. Essentially it is a Cognitive Behaviour Therapy that focuses on how we are responsible for our own distress by the thoughts and beliefs we hold. The goal is to change our thoughts and beliefs, which is turn would alter our feelings and behaviour and therefore lower the distress that we experience. I obtained an MSc from Goldsmiths University in 2010 in REBT and have practiced using these techniques with my clients and myself for that matter. In practicing on myself, I have discovered that the techniques work. I also use other techniques including those from Positive Psychology, Mindfulness, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy and Psychological Coaching as required by the client and their presenting problem. As mentioned before, I tailor the treatment to suit each and every client and am a great believer in a person centred approach to therapy. We will work at your own pace and I may ask you to complete some take home exercises only if we are both in agreement that it will help your progress. I value honest feedback and will change the process if you feel it is not working.
During the first session I usually explain my way of working in great detail giving you the chance to decide whether my approach to therapy resonates with you. This will also involve listening carefully to what you are saying in an impartial way so we can understand the difficulties you are experiencing in the present moment. We will look to your past experiences to help us understand why you think, do and behave the way you do in the present. Again this will be done in a very compassionate and non judgmental way. Changes you want to make to your life will be identified and we will discuss why this has been difficult to do up to now. At this point, we will list some of the ways that you have tried already and decide what has worked and what has not helped. Blocks and obstacles to your progress will be explored in detail and techniques to dissolve these will be tried and tested during our time together.
Towards the end of the first session, we will conclude with a goal and contract the number of sessions we will have together.
The essence of my practice is centred around helping everyone develop and improve their levels of resilience in whatever setting and circumstance they find themselves in. Resilience is a quality that is shared by everyone but in times of distress it is common to forget the levels of and tools of resilience that we have and we forget our ability to problem solve. Using some of my therapy techniques, will help to remember forgotten resilient skills and to find some new way of coping. These skills will be tried and tested in the therapy room as well as in your day to day activities to ascertain what works for you. Therapy times are flexible and can be scheduled around work or family need and is designed around providing you with all the tools necessary to become your own therapist. Follow up and review sessions will be held after therapy is concluded and top up sessions are also available to you.
I also offer group treatment sessions tailored specifically to develop resilience in certain problems such as stress. Resilient group sessions are also available for teachers and parents. The latest workshop I have developed is resilience in the workplace.
In summary, I offer a treatment that is flexible, wholistic and completely centred on you.
