You witnessed and felt injustice and pain from an early age and dreamed of a knight in shining armor coming to the rescue. You learned quickly that the world is an unpredictable and unsafe place. As a result, you wanted nothing more but make it better and be that knight in shining armor. If not you, who?
Through life, you found yourself feeling most alive and good about yourself serving others, in the heat of the battle and in the eye of a crisis. Your deep empathy for others and strong need to rescue and shield others is inseparable from who you are; it is the only way you’ve ever known to connect with the world. You also find yourself in relationships with people that need “rescuing.” You jump right into the heart of the fire and keep yourself busy carrying the whole world on your shoulders and keeping it safe. But as your body and mind keep score of all the things you’ve felt and witnessed, your armor starts weighing heavy on you. When things are quiet and there are no battles to fight or innocents to rescue, memories creep in. The pain you felt and saw resurfaces seemingly out of nowhere and floods your mind and hijacks your body. Nightmares steal your sleep and connecting with family and friends gets more and more difficult because “they won’t understand.” To deal with this you keep distant, ever-vigilant and restless, using work or an occasional drink to numb yourself and stay exhausted so you don’t have to have to think and feel. Your fuse gets shorter and shorter, leaving you feeling crushed, irritable and overwhelmed with guilt, regret and the fear of failure.
Are you that fierce warrior or selfless healer who saves and serves others, but feels your own needs can wait? Are you this man or woman who believes everyone deserves help but them? If you find yourself struggling and exhausted, hiding your wounds and feeling alone, with me you will find help.
For the last ten years I’ve helped people regain a sense of safety and joy for those whose lives are hijacked by trauma they experienced, such as combat stress, grief and loss, sexual assault, childhood abuse, and domestic, family and community violence. An US Air Force clinician and veteran, I’m keenly attuned to the unique needs of military members, first responders and helping-professionals, and how issues related to military trauma, burnout, compassion fatigue, survivor guilt and family reintegration can affect their well-being. I provide in-person and online (video) individual psychotherapy, couples’ therapy, pre-marital counseling as well as assertiveness training and career coaching.
Using the most effective trauma therapies like Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) (a fancy term for therapy that’s known as one of the most effective trauma treatments with an 80% success rate) I help people reclaim their lives from the grip of trauma and find balance and self-compassion.
