Treatment Approach

  • Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) Focuses on strengthening emotional bonds in couples or families. It helps people identify negative cycles and create more secure connections.
  • Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) A structured therapy that uses guided eye movements to help process traumatic memories. It is widely recognized for treating PTSD and trauma-related conditions.
  • Gottman Method Couples Therapy Based on decades of research, this method gives couples tools to improve communication, manage conflict, and strengthen intimacy.
  • Internal Family Systems (IFS) Helps clients heal by working with different ‘parts’ of themselves, like inner critics or wounded children. It fosters harmony within the self.
  • Jungian Therapy Draws on Carl Jung’s ideas about archetypes, dreams, and the collective unconscious. It helps people explore deeper layers of meaning.
  • Narrative Therapy Encourages people to view problems as separate from themselves and reframe their life story. It helps build resilience and self-identity.
  • Relational Psychotherapy Emphasizes the healing power of the therapist-client relationship. It uses trust and safety as a foundation for change.
  • Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT) Focuses on solutions and future goals rather than past problems. It is practical, short-term, and goal-driven.
Approach Description: I take a direct, no-nonsense approach to marriage therapy. I'm also calm, compassionate, kind, and curious in therapy sessions. I make a point of directly confronting any attempts at deception or manipulation that come up during therapy. I specialize in working with couples who struggle with narcissism, emotional abuse, anger, and avoidance. I also have extensive experience working with anxious and avoidant attachment, affair recovery, and differences in sexual desire. I am trained in Crucible Therapy Approach developed by David Schnarch.

James Christensen Practice Description
My wife and I spent many years working with many therapists to rebuild our own marriage. We were so tired of avoiding each other, walking on eggshells, and feeling sad, overwhelmed, and disconnected. When we finally did find a therapist who helped us heal our relationship, I went all-in on learning how to do the same thing for other couples. I am passionate about my work helping couples improve their relationships, move past jealousy and avoidance, and create new relationships full of love, honesty, kindness, and courage. There is nothing I want to do more in the world than help create more rewarding marriages.
