Trauma and PTSD are my major specialty. Even if we don't consciously know of any traumas that are holding us back, inner-child work always reveals to us negative thought patterns and subconscious limiting beliefs that have made it hard for us to live in alignment with our truest, most authentic and confident selves! Having been a PTSD survivor myself, an intuitive, highly sensitive and compassionate soul living a human experience, I wish to gift you all the tools that took me several years to learn within a matter of months. To ensure you have continual support and empower yourselves to make the changes needed to overcome ANY difficulties. If I can do it, so can you! I understand trauma to be an experience that plays out in the body: strong sensations overwhelm its capacity to tolerate everyday occurrences; triggers and memories rip it out of the present and throw it back into the past; and being around other people leaves it feeling like a fragile object. How might we learn to listen compassionately to what our body has to say about trauma? And how might our body come to feel once it knows that it's being listened to?

Trauma is often viewed as an “event” or “experience” like a terrible accident, abuse, a disaster, a death, etc. And it is a common view that the event or experience has to be considered “big” like these examples. And while such events and experiences can definitely be traumatic, other views expand on this, such as with the thinking that: >Trauma is not an event or an experience as such, it’s what’s stored in the brain and the body. (There is a book called “The Body Keeps the Score” by Dr. Bessel Van Der Kolk describing this.) >“Traumatic experiences” don’t have to be so “big”, and what is traumatic for you might not be traumatic for someone else, depending on things like if someone is more sensitive than someone else. Also, sometimes events enacted, witnessed, or experienced can be impactful because they run counter to your sense of morality and ethics, and these can be difficult to recover from too. While some people spontaneously recover from trauma over time with the love and support of family and friends, others may suffer from effects of lasting trauma, which can vary greatly from person to person but might include living with deep emotional pain, avoiding reminders of the event or experience, feeling depressed or nervous, feeling like the event is still happening, feeling very angry or guilty, having difficulty sleeping, judgments of self or others, or other effects, long after the actual experience has passed. In these circumstances, the support, guidance, and assistance of a counsellor can often be helpful in lessening the impact of the event or events on your life in the here and now, such as by helping you find healthy ways to cope with the lingering effects of the trauma, though certainly the road can sometimes be difficult. If you feel you are living with the effects of trauma and are wanting a more satisfying and values-directed life, I might be able to assist.

Psychologist, Mc(Psych), Registered Psychologist
Trauma can be the catalyst for any mental health concern that impedes our ability to live our best life. Often when trauma is discussed we immediately think of experiences related to bodily harm including childhood abuse, violence, warfare, serious accidents and sexual assault. However, trauma can also refer to incidents that do not threaten one’s physical life but still disrupt emotional functioning. Examples include divorce, interpersonal conflict, infertility, financial loss, infidelity and legal trouble. I decided to obtain specialized training in trauma when I realized how frequently it was impacting peoples’ ability to be their best selves. People would often tell me that they “knew” cognitively that their thinking post trauma was impeding their progress. However, simply changing their thoughts was failing to change the physiological response their body was having in situations that triggered their trauma related memories. I therefore decided to pursue training in EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing) and ART (Accelerated Resolution Therapy) to help people achieve peaceful congruency between their mind and body post trauma.
