Depression

Rory Valentine Diller

Registered Psychotherapist, M.A., LMFT Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist #139783
Depression can often grip our lives in very debilitating ways. We may feel stuck, pained, hopeless, exhausted, isolated, burnt out, and disinvested in life. These are signs of a dysregulated nervous system and often unresolved trauma is a significant factor. I support clients in moving through their depression using body-based therapies and creative approaches that target unconscious programming, and spiritual resources that help revitalize the soul.

Depression can feel like a dark cloud hanging over you all the time. You may feel tired, isolated, apathetic, or just generally blue. You may find yourself not enjoying the things that you used to enjoy. You spend more time crying than you used to. Thoughts of suicide and self-harm may come up as ways to escape or cope with the pain you are dealing with. All of us experience feelings of depression at times, but if you are experiencing intense sadness that is lasts for longer than you like, it may be time to reach out for support. I will work with you to first identify behaviors you would like to be engaged in (the things you miss doing) and then help you practice getting involved in those behaviors. Once you start feeling more engaged in life, my next step would be help you understand why the feelings of depression started to begin with and to identify the triggers that could cause you to feel like you are relapsing into those feelings. Once we identify those triggers, we will brainstorm together strategies to help increase feelings of happiness or contentment in your life. At times, medication may be suggested and I can help refer you to a psychiatrist or nurse practitioner who can assist with that piece.

Depression is largely caused by isolation. The more connections you have and the more activities you do, the less will be your depression. Low energy is a hallmark of depression and typically we don't have the energy to do the above, so we get into a negative spiral. Therapy can provide you with the support and encouragement you need so you can do the unnatural things that we all need to do to stay out of that darkness. Some people try medication and if they want to, I can work closely with the doctor to monitor the effects of medication.
