Successful relationships start with knowing and accepting ourselves. Then we can be clear about our needs and wants and learn to communicate clearly and appropriately. From there we can be genuinely empathetic and understanding of others points of view ultimately learning to identify and resolve dysfunctional patterns in your relationships.

What does couples counseling look like? Each session is completely confidential. As we work together, you will learn how to communicate better, identify disruptive patterns, and work as a team. In our first meeting we’ll discuss your hopes, wishes and goals. My job is to build safety, make sure you are heard, and start to develop a view of what is going on under the covers. Often, deep emotions and longings drive our behaviors. That last fight may not be about his family or what you said. It may be about whether you feel you are still loved, that you matter to your partner, that you are cherished. These roots go deep. The approach I use, Emotion-Focused Therapy (EFT), has over 30 years of research showing it works. 75% of couples who complete the sessions say their issues were resolved. Of these, over 90% say things are still as good, or better, two years later. EFT is powerful.

Relationships are the building blocks of our lives. And like anything important in life, they require thoughtful attention, dedication and work. Each person brings their own ideas, values, opinions and personal history into a relationship, and they don’t always match their partner’s. It brings me great joy to be invited into your most intimate relationships, to learn about the history that you each bring to the relationship, and how you find a way to sync two lives into one.  I have worked with couples of all orientations and types.  I use an approach known as Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT). EFT is one of the most researched approaches to couples therapy. Research studies find that by using EFT, 70-75% of couples move from distress to recovery and approximately 90% show significant improvements. In EFT, couples learn to identify their needs and fears that keep them apart. We work to identify the negative cycle that trap couples again and again and causes disconnection and isolation. This can happen even in the most loving of relationships. In our work together, couples develop new skills to repair the ruptures and find their way back to that secure, in-love, “heart to heart” connection.

I help couples work on issues around communication, trust and intimacy. I have experience working with couples who are doing "preventative" counseling or those who are dealing with issues in their relationship. Relationships are difficult. It takes many very unnatural behaviors to create a high-quality relationship. Improving your reactions to your partner is the most important aspect and, since it is the only thing you can control anyway, this is your work. Whether it is in a couple’s session or you do the work individually, you will need to improve yourself and your reactivity and become a better you. Too many couples enter my office and expect me to change their partner because they want relief from their negative interactions. I will always gently steer things back to what you can do to make things better. My style is solution oriented where I will give you all the tools I can in order to reduce conflict and increase connection, making a better relationship.

Humans are relational beings. When a person's relationships feel less than or too much, it impacts many areas of one's life. I strive to illuminate concerns that clients, as individuals, couples, or families, are experiencing and aid clients in navigating their complex relationships. I make myself available to give clients the ability to process their lives in a new way. If you believe I could be a good fit for you as your therapist, please get in touch with me.

All relationships meet challenges. Conflict is a normal and healthy experience in relationships. It's how we navigate conflict and recover from conflict that keeps relationships together through thick and thin. With support, a powerful bond can survive and endure all challenges that arise.

Relationships are a crucial component to our well being and fulfillment in life. Unfortunately, most of us did not have good role models while growing up to show us how to successfully navigate the conflicts and challenges that every relationship is bound to experience. Thankfully, it is never too late to learn how to build healthy and meaningful relationships. In our work together, I will lean on years of studying relationships and the best ways to help people create fulfilling connections.
