Bethesda, Maryland therapist: Dr. Patricia Webbink, psychologist
Autism and Asperger's

Dr. Patricia Webbink

Psychologist, MA and PhD in Clinical Psychology
I have worked with children, adolescents, and adults with Autism and Asperger’s in for over 50 years. I began my work with Autistic children at Duke University, where I received my Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology. There I studied with pioneers in the field of childhood autism, including Dr. Eric Schopler, a researcher into Autism and a colleague of Dr. Bernard Rimland, an early icon in the field of autism. For over 30 years, I created and produced summer programs for Autistic children where they received one-on-one attention. I have published four books, including The Power of the Eyes, which devotes a section to eye contact in autistic children. During my years of postdoctoral experience, I developed an expertise with children, adolescents and adults with Aspergers syndrome. These are bright individuals who can sometimes appear to function well, but who are plagued with poor judgment and limited interpersonal skills. Because they are often very bright, they can appear to be higher functioning than they are able. “A Beautiful Mind” is an extreme example of a brilliant individual who is plagued by hallucinations and delusions. Psychologist, PhD, HSP-P
Many autistic adults struggle to have connections with others in ways they would like. Moreover, social situations may feel downright confusing and anxiety-provoking and intimate relationships may seem impossible. In the professional sphere, you may struggle to keep steady employment, often finding that your ways of communicating with co-workers and bosses make it hard to feel you belong or that your talents are appreciated. I take an affirming, autism-informed approach in helping autistic adults to better appreciate themselves and thrive in their relationships and life pursuits.
