Many of them use sleeping pills out of desperation to get some sleep relief, and they become dependent on medications despite undesirable long term effects. Medication is not the best or even most effective solution to insomnia. Extensive research support the use of cognitive-behavioral therapy specifically for treating insomnia. CBT I (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia) is an effective and empirically supported treatment that has has been endorsed by the National Institutes of Health and is recommended as a preferred method for treating insomnia. Research on CBT I shows that 75% of insomnia patients experience significant improved in sleep and as much as 85- 90% of them reduce or stop taking sleeping pills completely after CBT I treatment.
