Depression can come in many forms. Weather you are experiencing seasonal depression (yes sometimes it can come in the Summer too) or chronic depressive episodes I am here for you. Depression can look like not being able to get out of bed or it can be invisible to those around us as we "high function" our way through painful emotions. Weather you are masking and showing up each day to work or having trouble getting basic tasks done I can work with you to overcome feelings of low self-esteem and emptiness and can happen with depression.

Overcome chronic feelings of emptiness and take back control over your life. High achievers, especially those who live in New York, have a tendency to associate fulfillment with accomplishments because they’ve been taught that their happiness and worth are directly related to their ability to crush goals at an early age. Unfortunately, life happens and even high achievers can’t be on their A-game all of the time. The problem is when something is wrong in the life of a high achiever, they tend to think it's because they haven't accomplished enough, and that they can fake it ‘til they make it. The truth is, sometimes being a high achiever can make you feel like you're expected to be happy all the time and when you struggle with depression daily, it may feel like you’ve lost control. You may have a hard time understanding why you can't just “get over it” and move on, or why you can't just “snap out of it” like you do when you are on top of your game. You might also feel like your achievements are meaningless because they don't know what else to do to make themselves feel better. It can be incredibly frustrating for someone who has worked hard for everything they have achieved to feel like that effort is failing them now. But depression doesn't care if you have a great job, amazing relationships, or luxurious things in your home: it just happens. It's not your fault, and we're here to help.

Our work starts by acknowledging the social, cultural, and environmental conditions that may contribute to the problems that affect your quality of life and capacity to receive or engage in mental health care. Therapy is tailored to your preferences to minimize stressors and build skills for interacting more effectively with the outside world. The behaviors, emotions, relationship patterns, or self-beliefs that no longer work for you can be transformed, rather than pathologized by identifying external power imbalances that impede quality of life and highlighting the good intentions behind difficult interactions.

Depression is a clinical condition which causes a person to feel extremely low for extended periods of time. It is caused by a combination of genetic, biological, psychological, social and environmental factors. Psychotherapy can be an effective treatment for depression because it can help you delve into the underlying reasons for your depression and learn new coping skills. Incorporating practical techniques to help you to reframe "depressed " negative thinking is also immensely helpful. The goal is for you to regain a sense of control and to eventually derive more pleasure from life. Please visit my website for more info about my services lhorowitz.com

Depression can be a mind-killer. One of the biggest problems with it is that even when a person knows what they can do to help themselves, they're too depressed to do it. I do recommend that seriously depressed persons consider medication. Anti-depression medication is generally not addictive.

Depression can look like exhaustion or a lack of motivation. There’s often a flatness or a disinterest in things that were once pleasurable. Depression is often described as a sustained feeling of sadness, pointlessness or grief. It can be intense or subtle but it is ongoing (generally for a number of weeks or longer). There is often a feeling of worthlessness. Together, we can discuss ways to treat the depression. I have a number of tools, including wonderful colleagues, with whom to collaborate, in order for you to feel better and be yourself again.
