Research has revealed that when a traumatic event occurs, the emotional reaction can get stored in our bodies. When this happens we call it trauma. I have trained in many approaches to foster trauma recovery and will use one or more in session. I like to apply somatic work to connect to and release trauma held in the body, and I use Internal Family Systems to identify and help parts of ourselves whose protective function is no longer necessary or optimal. Trauma work is lengthy and challenging, but I believe it is necessary if we want to be free of the control of our past.

Trauma, is a general term used to describe the subsequent psychological effects of a physical and/or emotional assault. Many still think of trauma as crisis catastrophes such as being an active participant or observer in war, physical and sexual assault, major accidents, etc. Events such as these are referred to as “big T” traumas. However, trauma researchers have identified some thing called “little t” traumas. Whereas big T traumas need to occur only once for a PTSD reaction to ensue, little “t” traumas tend to occur over a long period of time. For example, a highly sensitive child of a father who was a Drill Sergeant in the army, might be raised in a manner where she experiences harsh authoritative parenting practices aimed at “toughening-up“ the child so as to be prepared for the hard and cold truths of the world. Although her father’s intentions are loving and good, being the recipient of such parenting over the span of 15 years coupled with being a very sensitive child has the cumulative results of a big T trauma . Regardless of where the client falls on this dimension of trauma, effective treatments include re-living and talking about those traumatic experiences from the past. This is done to help the client come up with an understanding of how and why this happened to her. Once the trauma is processed, the client can now move forward with her life in a healthy manner untethered to her traumatic past. If reliving and talking about past traumas is not sufficient, the next step involves journalling about the traumas. More recent interventions include EMDR as well as Bilateral Tactical Stimulation. I utilize all of these approaches, or a combination thereof, to help treat my clients.
