My practice is based within a collaborative framework whereby the first task of psychotherapy is to identify and articulate what brings you to therapy. This provides a means of identifying the focus of psychotherapy, and most appropriate and effective ways for us to work together. In addressing this task I value your active involvement, whilst recognising that the provision of a supportive therapeutic relationship is a necessary precursor for collaboration. My practice is based primarily in medium to long term psychotherapy, but I also offer brief strategic therapy where appropriate. As a Clinical Psychologist I can offer medicare rebates as well as eligibility for private health insurance rebates (providing you have the appropriate level of cover). I bring a long experience and a wide range of training to my practice. My training and experience includes the fields of somatic psychology, clinical psychology, psychoanalytic psychotherapy, experiential and emotion-focussed therapies, and mindfulness based approaches to psychotherapy. My practice is grounded in the field of relational psychoanalytic psychotherapy. A core assumption of this approach is that our personality and relationship patterns are derived from our relationships with other people - both historical and contemporary. Relational psychotherapy also recognises that cultural, social, political and linguistic agents are additional important factors in our experience of, and attitudes towards, primary relationships. My practice focuses upon the transformation of the individual’s relationship with self and significant others as a core task of therapy. The therapeutic relationship is one of the agents of this transformation, along with the individual’s existing relationships with significant others. I believe that whilst therapy might sometimes be described as ‘work’, it should also have the capacity for spontaneity and lightness where appropriate and fitting for the therapeutic goals.
