Trauma and PTSD

Chris Chappell

Licensed Mental Health Counselor, MA, MS, LMHC
Are having disturbing flashbacks, recurring difficult memories, feeling triggered but not sure why? Have you been avoiding certain situations because they make you very uncomfortable? Would you like to not be driven by fears connected to the past? Trauma (that is, perceived life-threatening incidents) can reside in the body and the nervous system without our even being aware of it. In nature, animals experience life-threatening incidents and they shake it off, literally, by trembling, crying, or shaking. People, however, in our culture at least, are taught at a very early age that it's not OK to shake or cry - we are told to 'hold it together' or 'pull yourself up by your bootstraps' or 'don't cry'. People will often grab you and forcibly stop you from shaking, but shaking is what our animal bodies need after a life-threatening occurrence (which can include witnessing someone else's life threatened). So, because the natural relief valves are turned off, the trauma sticks in the body and may not go away for a long time. Trauma is also historical and inter-generational, passed down through families and cultures. If you come to me with trauma as an issue, we will talk about the sources if you want to, but more importantly, we will work with the nervous system and the body gently, through somatic therapy. First, helping you to feel strongly resourced in your body, and then, slowly tapping into the feelings and memories that are disturbing, and using mindful awareness to very gently allow release of the trauma. Doing this work outdoors can amplify the benefits because our nervous systems are naturally tuned by evolution not to the modern rhythms of offices, buildings, clocks, cars, and computers, but to the more gentle, slow rhythms of nature, of flowing water, of rustling leaves, of singing birds, of the wind and clouds. I can help you heal your trauma and be less afraid and anxious.

Healing can look different to different people. Ultimately, powerful healing is rooted in aligning the mind, body, and soul. This is what holistic wellness is all about. With a counseling focus on creating mental, emotional, and physical balance, you can release past trauma and create a beautiful future. We can encourage our own healing by taking up practices that restore balance to our bodies, minds, and souls. Healing is not the same as a cure, although it can be done with or without a cure as a result. It’s also not a one-and-done solution, and the aim is not to “fix” ourselves or someone else.
