Suicidal thoughts can be overwhelming and feel defeating. However, it is a myth that if you talk about it you are more likely to harm yourself. On the contrary when you talk about it you release this from inside of you and by verbalizing it you are normalizing these thoughts and can process through more rational ways of handling these deep emotions and thoughts. The various trainings I have completed and the individuals I have served with suicidal thoughts have debunked this myth time and again.
We have worked with suicidal thoughts closely. When a patient is experiencing this, we first focus on safety. After this is established, we work closely on what are the root causes and closely curate a plan to move forward that honors your needs.
As a current full time Crisis Clinician, I am have a strong understanding about what supports can be put into place to assist with helping individuals with SI to construct safety plans and recognize symptoms.
