Social Isolation

Nina Hopmeier

Licensed Professional Counsellor, Registered Clinical Counsellor (RCC)
Since we are by nature social beings, isolation from society can create feelings of loss, helplessness, and loneliness. Reasons for social isolation vary from person to person. In working together, we will explore what factors have lead to social isolation and how your current lifestyle may prevent you from creating a rich and fulfilling life. A fundamental part of therapy is also exploring the factors that maintain the social isolation. The therapy models that I apply largely depend on the unique history and relationship that the client has with social isolation. If social isolation occurs due to avoiding anxiety, I would primarily work with the Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) model and with the Emotion Focused Therapy model (EFT) in order to change your relationship to the uncomfortable feelings maintaining the isolation. If isolation occurs due to debilitating thoughts that create feelings of hopelessness and insecurity I would work with the Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) model in order to help you challenge thoughts that prevent you from living the life that you want. If you are somebody who isolates socially I would be happy to work with you and devise a treatment plan that aligns with your unique needs.

Social isolation can be deeply painful—many attempt to dismiss or overlook feelings of loneliness when they arise. Past traumas often serve as the underlying reasons for isolation, as they provide a sense of safety. It may feel safer to be alone. If you find yourself avoiding social interactions, frequently canceling plans with others, or experiencing anxiety and panic in group settings, support is available. I've experienced similar struggles, received training, and can provide the support you need to navigate them.
