Domestic Abuse or Violence is any act carried out with the intention of physically or emotionally harming another person who is in relationship. The purpose of all abuse is to control the victim’s behavior by inducing fear to gain power and control. If you have been subjected to abuse in your life, your nervous system is likely still activated and we can work through your trauma responses to help you self regulate and manage your relationship with the abuser.
Domestic Abuse or violence are experiences that are very difficult to work through. Working with a therapist who has experience and calm with these issues are key. I see these situations as escalated patterns where a person often gets activated by another person, and reacts with a part of themselves that is an extreme protector. Others experience this a threat and react in a variety of ways they have learned to survive. I believe these patterns can be changed, and relationships can be repaired with effort, willingness to be vulnerable in the work to understand and shift reactivity to more clear and calm responses. I have supported individuals, couple and families make these changes.
