Approach Description: My approach is relational and systemic, which takes into account the importance of understanding your family of origin, community and cultural aspects that are involved in how we understand our limits and capabilities. I also understand and utilize the power of emotions that drive our experiences in both helpful and challenging ways. Therapy involves understanding historical experiences that have us stuck in development, and create problematic patterns of interaction with Self and others. Therapy works at getting resolution of this pattens, and actioning new experiences - from a neurological perspective this leads to "re-wiring" our Selves to continue growth and working towards more peace and potential. I have been trained and supervised in a variety of therapeutic models. Each model is considered evidence and practice based. I favour approaches that take into account our human development and growth from birth onward. The early and continued experiences with our significant others has a powerful effect on how we respond or react, what are challenges for us, and what strengths we possess. Our unique cultural environment also has an impact. I favour models of therapy that are based on the notion that clients do not have something wrong with them (i.e., a psychopathology), but are challenged by what has happened to them. There may be a sense of relief for some people when they have a diagnosis, however having that knowledge rarely results in a pathway to positive change. Simply put, a mental health diagnosis does not provide a clear pathway to change or growth. Working with me is a partnership, informed by your relational resources and personal efforts to improve your life. We all have potential to gain self-respect, self-worth, and a sense of belonging in relationships that support trust and being loved. When we have a history that makes that seem difficult or 'impossible' it does require effort and courage to do this work. I will be there to witness, validate and guide you.

Reg Fleming Practice Description
I have a small private practice that operates 3 days per week (currently Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays) in Downtown Victoria, BC in the Yarrow Building. I am in a group practice with several therapists, which allows for consultation and the option to refer to colleagues I am familiar with. I am committed in assisting clients to find therapy services that are a good fit with either me or another therapist. My practice is guided by Feedback Informed Treatment (F.I.T.), which is a well researched meta-model approach based on decades of research on what makes talk therapy effective. This research emphasizes the importance of tracking outcomes and getting client feedback. It also identifies that the majority of change is the contribution of the client and their existing resources, accounting for 70% of the improvement seen in psychotherapy (Lambert, 1992). The relationship between client and therapist accounts for 30% of improvement (therapist factors like empathy, acceptance, caring, competence, support and being personable - Howe 1996). So efforts to understand and utilize both what the client brings and what enhances a therapeutic alliance are critical to significant change in talk therapy. Treatment models account for 15% of improvement (Lambert 1992). The most important aspect of the model used is the allegiance to the model(s) and the fit with the client. I have extensive training, supervision and experience with a variety of treatment models. This offers me flexibility in matching what may be helpful to my clients. I have an allegiance to Family Systems approaches, including Solution Focused Therapy, Narrative Therapy, Bowenian Family Systems, Emotionally Focused Therapy, and more recently Internal Family Systems. In short, we are developed and shaped by our families, our attachment process, and our cultural experiences. Knowledge and skills in a variety of approaches allows me to match an approach that works for a particular person based on their response and feedback to my approach. Feedback is provided using the Session Rating Scale at the end of each session, taking about 5 minutes. What is paramount for me and my practice is the support of client well being and progress. Each client is treated as a unique individual with relational resources and personal strengths. Therefore, therapy is guided by the process of me getting to know you and your needs, wants, strengths, challenges, and preferences. In short, my practice with you is informed by our work together.
