Anxiety or Fears

Arne Pedersen - Hypnotherapy Victoria

Hypnotherapist, RCCH
Anxiety and fear often arise when the nervous system has learned to stay on guard, anticipating threat even when there is no immediate danger. Many people experience anxiety as persistent worry, physical tension, or a constant sense of unease — despite knowing logically that they are safe. From a mindfulness-based perspective, anxiety is understood as a protective response shaped by past experiences where uncertainty, stress, or emotional overwhelm felt difficult to manage. Over time, the nervous system can remain stuck in fight-or-flight, reacting to present situations as though the past is still happening. When the body stays in this heightened state, it uses a great deal of energy and has little opportunity to return to balance, rest, and repair. This ongoing strain can create an internal sense of threat, reinforcing the feeling that life is unsafe and causing external situations to be perceived as more dangerous or overwhelming than they actually are. In our work together, the focus is on helping the nervous system gradually recognize safety in the present moment. Through mindfulness practices, breath awareness, and body-based awareness, clients learn how to become more comfortable with uncomfortable emotions and the physical sensations that arise with them. As people gain experience staying present with these feelings, confidence grows. Anxiety often softens not because life becomes easier, but because there is a growing trust in the ability to feel, process, and move through whatever emotions life brings. When emotional capacity expands, fears lose their grip, and people experience greater freedom, clarity, and confidence in what they choose to do. Hypnotherapy can further support this process by helping update subconscious threat responses and creating felt experiences of calm, safety, and steadiness that reinforce this trust.

Anxiety or Fears

Theodosia Daflos

Counsellor/Therapist, MA
Everyone experiences anxiety. It can actually be quite helpful, motivating us to do things that are important to us, or letting us know of potential danger. Anxiety becomes problematic when we're afraid of things that aren't actually dangerous, or when our anxiety stops us from doing things that are important to us. The good news is Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy for anxiety disorders are among the most successful treatments we have in psychology. They work by teaching you how to accurately evaluate your anxiety triggers to tell if your anxiety reaction is justified or not. If your anxiety reaction doesn't match the threat, you learn skills to help you act more effectively, and manage your emotional reaction in the moment.

Vancouver, British Columbia therapist: Candice Seligman, counselor/therapist
Anxiety or Fears

Candice Seligman

Counsellor/Therapist, MACP, DVATI, CCC
I work with women who experience chronic anxiety, worry, or persistent fears that feel hard to manage alone. Many are highly sensitive or high functioning on the outside while feeling tense, overwhelmed, burnt out, or on edge internally. Using a trauma informed and somatic approach, we address the nervous system patterns beneath the anxiety rather than just managing symptoms. The goal is to help you feel safer in your body, more regulated, and more trusting of yourself.

Victoria, British Columbia therapist: Michelle Iulianella Counselling & Psychotherapy, counselor/therapist
Anxiety or Fears

Michelle Iulianella Counselling & Psychotherapy

Counsellor/Therapist, BEd, MBA, MA, RCC
Based in the primary emotion of fear, anxiety is an appropriate human response to stress. When experienced in a healthy way, anxiety can increase alertness and focus when we need it most. However, when anxiety takes over as the primary emotion, regardless of the situation, it can profoundly interfere with all aspects of one’s life. Anxiety can manifest within the body as muscle tension, feeling chronically “keyed up” or “on edge”, rapid heart rate, gastrointestinal issues and sleep disturbances. It can show up as feelings of dread, panic, anger, irritability, impatience, and restlessness. Anxiety tends to make us want to avoid the perceived source of the anxiety. As a result, some people will avoid certain experiences, leading to isolation. Michelle believes that it is essential to seek help when experiencing unmanageable anxiety. She works with clients experiencing situational anxiety, as well as chronic generalized anxiety, social anxiety, and panic attacks.

Victoria is British Columbia's capital city and a major retirement destination, giving it an older demographic profile than most Canadian cities — one that generates consistent demand for therapists working with aging, loss, caregiver stress, and the psychological dimensions of life transitions in later years. The city's government-worker culture, combined with the University of Victoria and Royal Roads University, creates a well-educated population that is generally comfortable seeking therapy and willing to engage in longer-term work. Island Health provides public mental health resources alongside a well-established private therapy community serving Oak Bay, Saanich, and the Inner Harbour area. Victoria's separation from Metro Vancouver by water means specialist therapist access can be limited in some areas, with telehealth filling an important gap for clients seeking a specific type of match.
