When talking about a city the size of Miami, there are many aspects you need to consider. Of the nearly 414,000 people in the city, at least 40 percent of the population deals with mental health problems ranging from stress management to sleep disorders and more. Some of the prevalent issues that Miami faces is alcohol abuse and illicit substance abuse. In addition to substance abuse, over 16 percent of adults between the ages of 18-25 in the area deal with serious psychological distress due to domestic abuse and other factors. In addition, about 7 percent of adults over 18 have had major depressive episodes that lasted more than two weeks, within the last year.

There are unique needs of the residents of the Miami area. One of the biggest things that residents face is a language barrier. This is problematic when trying to find a mental health professional. However, as you look through our community of mental health experts, you will be able to easily find professionals that speak the language you need. About 52 percent of all residents in the Miami area are foreign-born, and approximately 72 percent of Miami residents speak a language other than English when they are at home.

If you or a loved one is dealing with substance abuse, depression, domestic violence, or any type of mental health problem, it’s important to remember that there are people who can help. When you’re considering looking into finding a mental health professional, ask yourself the following questions:

    • What type of help am I looking for?
    • What does my insurance cover?
    • What do I want/need in a therapist?
    • What language does my therapist need to speak to best communicate?
    • What type of approach am I most comfortable with?

Understanding your own answers to these questions will help you find the right therapist. This will also help you guide your therapy in a way that will best help you.

In addition to these questions, you need to make sure that you find a therapist or mental health professional who understands what you are dealing with. This means that you should look for someone who specialized therapist in your area of need. Working with someone who is not specialized in what you are looking for is not ideal or beneficial for anyone. Working with an expert allows you to get the help and resources you need, no matter what part of Miami you live in.

Take the time to find a therapist or mental health professional who can help you. As you free yourself from addiction, depression, or any other mental health concerns, you will find that life becomes more enjoyable. You don’t have to live with mental health issues alone and untreated.
