Theodosia Daflos
Counsellor/Therapist, MA
Social anxiety is one of the most common anxiety disorders. Many people have some discomfort meeting new people, talking in front of a group, making or answering phone calls, and making small talk. Anxiety in social situations starts becoming a problem if it's causing you difficulties in work, school, with your family, keeping or making friends, or is very intense when you're in these situations. Using Cognitive Behavioural Therapy or Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, we will learn to accurately assess the fears you have in these situations, and learn skills to manage your anxiety when it does not match the threat of the situation. We will also work on interpersonal skills training to help with more accurate communicating if this is something you struggles with, as well as setting and maintaining boundaries and limits.

Reg Fleming
Marriage and Family Therapist, M.A., RMFT, RCC
Social and other anxieties can be very problematic, supporting a belief that a strategy to avoid or at least limit social connections is a good temporary solution. I have worked with client anxieties and fears that restrict their capacities to connect with others, and reinforce beliefs that there is something wrong with them. I see anxiety as a natural fear response that can escalate into the temporary solutions, like avoidance or isolation. This can, in turn, develop into a bigger problem. I work with clients in a process to understanding their origins of these patterns and defences. Once they trust that I understand, then I support them to address the issues that burdened or harmed them and regain their Self as more calm; confident; and courageous with connecting with others.

Candice Seligman
Counsellor/Therapist, MACP, DVATI, CCC
Social anxiety can show up as fear of being judged, worrying about how others perceive you, difficulty speaking up, feeling tense or high anxiety in social settings, wanting to cancel plans or isolate, a fear of judgement, or replaying conversations and interactions in your mind. You may feel pressure to perform, hide parts of yourself, or experience physical symptoms of anxiety when around others. I work somatically, trauma-informed, and with the nervous system, inner child, and energy field in mind to help release the deeper roots of social fear and tension. My focus is compassionate, root-cause healing that supports you in feeling safer, more grounded in your body, and more able to show up as your authentic self with greater ease.

Victoria is British Columbia's capital city and a major retirement destination, giving it an older demographic profile than most Canadian cities — one that generates consistent demand for therapists working with aging, loss, caregiver stress, and the psychological dimensions of life transitions in later years. The city's government-worker culture, combined with the University of Victoria and Royal Roads University, creates a well-educated population that is generally comfortable seeking therapy and willing to engage in longer-term work. Island Health provides public mental health resources alongside a well-established private therapy community serving Oak Bay, Saanich, and the Inner Harbour area. Victoria's separation from Metro Vancouver by water means specialist therapist access can be limited in some areas, with telehealth filling an important gap for clients seeking a specific type of match.
