Edmonton, Alberta therapist: Maggie Davidson, psychologist
Autism and Asperger's

Maggie Davidson

Psychologist, MC, Registered Psychologist
Your past does not have to be your future. Autism is a neurological difference that effects how you experience the world. Autism brings advantages and disadvantages. I can help you learn to use your strengths to compensate for your weak areas. Autistic people often struggle with social skills, but social skills like all skills, are things we can learn. Autism means you have a different way of thinking and being in the world. If you are Autistic it is important that the professionals you are working with have a good understanding of neurodiversity in order that they can best support you. I have worked extensively with neurodiverse individuals and have a good understanding of Autism, ADHD, and other neurological differences. Please contact me if you would like to set up a free intake and we can get started on the process of helping you move forward with your future.

Beiseker, Alberta therapist: Jayne Batten, counselor/therapist
Autism and Asperger's

Jayne Batten

Counsellor/Therapist, MSc, CT, RPC, MPCC
I define myself as a “neurodiversity affirming therapist” and feel absolutely honoured to work with neurodiverse individuals and couples. This means I understand and work with autism, ADHD and other neurodiverse groups through the lens of neuroscience. Autism is associated with differences in the brain which result in a divergence from neurotypical standards, in terms of how brains filter and make sense of information. I endeavour to help clients shed misplaced humiliation and a sense of failure by becoming conscious of and removing the notion that ‘typical’ traits are superior. It is the neurodiverse individuals in our society that move humanity along.

One of my favourite metaphors for Autism is that it is like a salad bar. The diversity of experience in the Autistic community is wide and far-ranging, much like a plentiful salad bar filled with various veggies, dressings, and toppings that can be combined into an infinite number of salad options. As such, I aim to hold space for you to share and explore your experience. Perhaps your experience includes lateral thinking, heightened sensory awareness, sensory overload, a love for the arts or cosplay, meltdowns or shutdowns, special interests, or exceptional abilities. Perhaps you are unfamiliar with many or some of these concepts and are trying to make sense of your experiences or wondering why you keep burning out. Perhaps you have a solid understanding of Autism but are frustrated by other aspects of life, such as anxiety, the need to mask, or the relenting demands of daily life in a world designed for non-autistic brains. Wherever you are, I aim to hold space for you to be seen, heard, and valued. I am here to support you in making sense of and finding ways to work with your Autistic self/brain. If you'd like to learn more about how I can support you in your journey with Autism, check out my blog post on the R.I.S.E. framework.
