Melissa Pickett, LPCC
Licensed Professional Counsellor
I normally treat social anxiety with CBT, ACT and/or ERP. ERP has been shown to be effective in treating social anxiety disorders, coming up with ways to challenge the anxiety and fears.
My plan is to start with less anxiety provoking situations (even imaginary situations!) and working our way up to more challenging ones as we accomplish the smaller goals.

I have lots of previous experience supporting clients with social anxiety. Social anxiety is becoming a more & more common issue with people, but it can be relieved & softened by talking about it, understanding it & using Cognitive Behavioral Therapeutic techniques to mitigate those tricky to shift thought patterns.

Dr Aneliya Gonsard
Psychologist, DClinPscy, MSc, BA
Through my training and practice I have come to understand social anxiety as another expression of interpersonal and communication difficulties that can bring much suffering to peole who experience it. Not only due to the feelings of often intense anxiety itself, but also through avoiding anxiety-inducing situations and thus often missing out on opportunities to be with others, develop and enjoy life.
I work psychoanalytically, which means that what I offer is a space to think about these experiences in a deeper way - as part of your overall functioning and inner life, as opposed to focusing solely on symptom reduction.

Human beings are not the only social animal, but our ability to interact with other people is a critical factor in our lives and thereby our sense of wellbeing. Social anxiety arises for many different reasons-- sometimes as a result of difficult experiences during our upbringing, resulting in low self-esteem, for example. In recent times the temptation to compare ourselves to others has been distorted by cultural phenomena such as social media. We are constantly bombarded by images of success, beauty, attainment, wealth, and so on that we can never hope to achieve. This creates an unrealistic sense of worth and worthlessness that sometimes causes us to isolate ourselves even further. Psychological counselling can help evaluate who we really are, what we want to achieve, and how we can do this. In my experience the most effective treatment is an evaluation of the root causes of social anxiety in my clients. I then design a specific coaching program to enable my clients to engage with the social world.
