We will process and integrate your traumatic experiences in a safe and supportive environment. In therapy you will understand the impact of trauma on their thoughts, emotions, and behaviors, as well as develop coping strategies to manage trauma-related symptoms such as flashbacks, nightmares, and hypervigilance. Additionally, therapy may involve psychoeducation about trauma reactions, emotion regulation techniques, and building skills for self-care and resilience.

Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) often creates very painful symptoms and is something for which I use a therapy called Prolonged Exposure (PE). In this therapy, we will revisit traumatic situations, process painful emotions, and change unhelpful beliefs about yourself and the world around you as a result of your trauma. People are often amazed at how quickly this treatment can work and by the very meaningful change that can result. For these reasons, this is one of my favorite treatments to provide.

Following a traumatic event, everyone experiences certain symptoms. It’s the sleepless nights, the sudden recollections that invade your memories, and the unexpected panic in situations that remind you of the event. For many of us, that experience fades over time. With PTSD, something blocks that natural recovery. Rather than fading away, those reactions intensify. It is this intensification that forms many of the symptoms of PTSD. These symptoms include: - Sudden, unexpected memories - Avoiding locations and events - Difficulty sleeping - Feeling "jumpy" or easily startled - Feeling perpetually “in danger” It is estimated that 70% of adults have experienced a traumatic event at some point in their life. Because trauma can be complex and overwhelming, it requires a knowledgable approach to treatment. Trauma Therapy With Tempest Counseling The goal of treating trauma is to identify what is “blocking” that ability to recover, overcome those barriers, and facilitate that process of healing. To accomplish this, Tempest draws from three of the leading evidence-based treatments for trauma. These include Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TFCBT), and Prolonged Exposure Therapy (PE). All three of these are considered the gold standard for PTSD treatment. Better still, these three approaches have proven to be highly effective online. Each has particular strengths, and some methods work better depending on the unique experiences of the client. At Tempest, we employ a combination of these three protocols, tailored to your specific needs. This unique, individualized approach is what allows Tempest to be so effective in trauma treatment.

Most people will experience trauma in their lifetime whether it’s a car accident, abuse or neglect, the sudden death of a loved one, a violent criminal act, exposure to the violence of war, or a natural disaster. While many people can recover from trauma over time with the love and support of family and friends and bounce back with resiliency, others may discover effects of lasting trauma, which can cause a person to live with deep emotional pain, fear, confusion, or posttraumatic stress far after the event has passed. In these circumstances, the support, guidance, and assistance of a therapist is fundamental to healing from trauma.
