Trauma can be either an accumulation of experiences or a specific traumatic event in a person's life that can make them feel stuck in that distressing experience. Traumatic events such as war, natural disasters, and violence can create long lasting effects. There can also be accumulated trauma from years of abuse, neglect, and dysfunctional relationships that can continue to affect us years after the abuse has ceased.
These traumatic events can undermine our perception of ourselves and others, making it difficult to trust the world as safe and yourself as competent and worthy of love. Additionally, flashbacks can involve all five senses, and can cause anxiety, panic attacks, and a generalized stress response.
However, with therapy, the journey to healing the past, understanding the present, and building a more meaningful future can begin.

Traumatic experiences are common yet unique to each person. While each person possesses unique resources and skills, trauma responses (fight, flight, freeze, fawn) can throw one off balance from their consistent, preferred way of living. I will collaborate with you to form a treatment plan to forge a treatment plan that meets your preferred way of living.

When we think of Trauma and PTSD we often think of the big events such as wars, natural disasters, violence, etc. But we can also experience the symptomatology of trauma and PTSD in our daily lives and be completely unaware of it. The symptoms of trauma can result from both an acute event or from chronic adverse, distressing experiences in our lives that we might not automatically categorize as traumatic. We can also experience trauma vicariously/indirectly, by witnessing other people's pain or listening to their traumatic stories. This is especially true of the helping professions. Regardless of how trauma shows up for you, whether it's direct or indirect exposure, therapy can be incredibly helpful. You can begin to cultivate safety by focusing on regulating your nervous system, processing past experiences and integrating them into your life story in a way that allows you to no longer feel stuck in the distressing experience(s) and able to move forward, creating a meaningful and fulfilled life for yourself.

Watras Counselling and Psychotherapy Services
Registered Psychotherapist, RP, MACP, BSc
Working with trauma and the impacts it can have on an individual can be a delicate process; our traumas can be so painful and can have a great impact on how we feel, what we do, and who we are. I specialize in working with clients whose behaviours, feelings, and emotions have largely been shaped by the experiences they have had, and I make it clear to all of them that their lives do not have to be shaped by these experiences and that there is so much that can be done to remove the problematic feelings or reactions from their lives. It can be a deep and comprehensive process, but it is incredibly rewarding, both for the client and for me.

EMDR Therapy Toronto - Heal Anxiety, PTSD, Childhood Trauma - Ayan Mukherjee
Registered Psychotherapist, Certified EMDR Therapist & Consultant
Trauma and PTSD is my primary specialization and I utilize EMDR Therapy, IFS, Deep Brain Reorienting, somatic psychotherapy and other neurobiologically oriented therapies to process the traumatic memories. The processing of memories that activate the cluster of symptoms that are defined as PTSD involves two parts: Firstly, desensitizing and reducing the high emotional charge attached to the memories. Secondly, as the memories drop in charge, the brain sends the memories from short-term muscle memory to long-term memory. It is called memory reconsolidation and it gives you the experience of finally moving on from those events. Email me for a free 30-minute phone consultation to discuss more.

Trauma is an emotional response to a terrible event like an accident, abuse, or natural disaster, etc. This is an event that has happened to us, someone close to us, or something we witnessed that can have lasting effects on us like unpredictable emotions, flashbacks, strained relationships and even physical symptoms. Research shows that addressing trauma often helps with symptoms of low mood and anxiety, while treating low mood and anxiety in the absence of addressing underlying trauma is less likely to result in meaningful and long-lasting changes.
Therapy can help you explore past hurts and trauma, focusing on healing our wounded parts, regulating our nervous system, and making peace with the past by exploring the concepts of meaning making and practicing acceptance. Our therapists can help you work towards healing from the past, feeling more emotionally regulated in the present, and work towards fulfilling your dreams in the future.
