Although historically I have helped people with severe Depression, my current practice tends to help people overcome more moderate levels of Depression, or at least Depressions that are in at least partial remission. In many ways this relates to my practice being conducted online. In general, I use a biopsychosocial model in how I approach helping people to gain mastery over Depression. I try to help my clients to replace patterns that increase Depression with patterns that will counteract it related to their thoughts, feelings, behavior, relationships, and context. Toward this end, I support my Depressed clients in evaluating how they are doing in each of these areas, to consider the results they are getting with the strategies they are using in each of these areas and then to find alternatives that will serve them better. One guiding premise I use is that Depression focuses on the past. So, much of what I strive to assist Depressed clients in doing is to shift to considering what they would ideally like in the future and then to assist them in moving toward that future collaboratively. As with other areas, the specific techniques and strategies used will vary for each client, and most often a combination of interventions are used in a sequence based upon the particular needs and preference of each particular client.

Are you feeling depressed? Sad, overwhelmed, stressed, and just tired? Are you tired of having your past experience or past traumas interfere with your ability to have the life you want? Or are you a parent of a child that has experienced trauma and don’t want that experience to dictate the course of their life? I help adolescents and young adults that have experienced trauma and are experiencing feelings of shame, anger, detachment, anxiety, and depression, and having a difficult time in their relationships, work, and day to day life. I help them to overcome and cope with such feelings, and empower them to have the life they want through healing from their past traumas. I specialize in working with individuals that have experienced stressful or dangerous events such as child abuse, domestic violence, the loss of a parent, parents that have struggled with substance abuse or mental illness, or just multiple bad days strung together. It can be hard to know where to start and almost impossible to start alone. I would love to help guide you through this process. I am only offering virtual therapy at this time. Please send me an email and I follow-up with a phone call to discuss how I may be able to help.

Depression is often a symptom of unresolved feelings. It can be a reaction to anxiety that has exhausted itself, or anger turned inward. Some people are perfectionistic to a fault and constantly beat up on themselves for failing to attain an impossible standard of living. As a psychodynamic clinician, I help depressed people find the roots of their depression, rather than just addressing the symptoms.

Research shows that a cognitive behavioral approach is quite powerful for depression and tends to work even better than medication.
