Trauma and PTSD

Michaela Decker

Counselor/Therapist, LMFT
Frequently, people who have experienced trauma develop extraordinary survival skills. Often the strategies that were critical for survival, are not sustainable long term and thwart the ability to develop satisfying work, family and/or romantic relationships. Therapy provides an opportunity to become "unstuck" and transcend thinking and behavior patterns that are holding you back from realizing your potential. I specialize in the treatment of PTSD, anxiety and depression, and am trained in EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing). When distress from a disturbing event remains, the upsetting images, thoughts, and emotions may create an overwhelming feeling of being back in that moment. EMDR therapy helps the brain process these memories, and allows normal healing to resume. EMDR therapy is not complete until attention has been brought to the past memories that are contributing to the problem, the present situations that are disturbing, and what skills the needed for the future.

The approaches I use with PTSD include: Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART) and Written Exposure Therapy (WET) as well as other trauma-focused interventions. Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART) is an evidenced-based, efficient therapy for PTSD and other psychiatric conditions. It is derived from Eye-Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR). The NREPP (National Registry of Evidence-Based Programs and Practices), a subsidiary of SAMHSA (Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration), determined that accelerated resolution therapy is an effective form of treatment for PTSD. Written Exposure Therapy (WET) is recommended as a first-line treatment for PTSD in the VA/DoD Clinical Practice Guideline for Managing PTSD and it is listed as an emerging recommended treatment in the International Society for the Study of Traumatic Stress (ISTSS) guideline.

The purpose of therapy for trauma and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is to assist individuals in recovering from the emotional and psychological effects of traumatic experiences. Various events, including accidents, abuse, violence, natural disasters, and witnessing traumatic events, can cause trauma. PTSD is a trauma-related disorder characterized by intrusive and distressing memories, avoidance of trauma-related stimuli, negative mood and cognitive changes, and heightened arousal. The selected therapeutic approach for trauma and PTSD may vary depending on the individual's specific requirements, the nature of the trauma, and their treatment objectives. Numerous clinicians may combine therapeutic approaches to develop a comprehensive, individualized treatment plan. It is essential to recognize that trauma therapy can be emotionally taxing, as individuals may be required to confront distressing memories and emotions. Consequently, working with a qualified and experienced trauma therapist who can provide a secure and supportive environment throughout the recovery process is crucial. Suppose you or someone you know is experiencing trauma or PTSD symptoms. In that case, it is strongly recommended that you seek assistance from a mental health professional trained in trauma therapy to begin the healing and recovery process.
