Dr. Patricia Webbink

Psychologist, MA and PhD in Clinical Psychology
For many years, I have offered a Substance Abuse and Addictions program for individuals, couples & groups. The root of an addiction often lies in dysfunctional family experiences in childhood. Whatever form it takes- overeating, gambling substance abuse, etc., the addictive cycle often numbs feelings or serves as an attempt to fill an inner emptiness. I use various methods to stop the addiction and replace it with more functional ways of dealing with needs and feelings. I have developed a safe and effective approach using guided imagery and music leading to an altered state of consciousness, which can serve as a substitute for the high, which one gets with drugs. Adolescents and adults learn to say no to drinking, smoking, over-eating and drugs. They learn to recognize how they are putting their education, health, family ties, and social life at risk. Often they are “medicating” their depression or anxiety with addiction, and they find far better ways of dealing with these problems. My colleagues and I have done family and friend interventions for drug and alcohol abuse. Over many years, my specialty has been with ACOAs (Adult Children of Alcoholics). Many adult children of alcoholics become alcoholics themselves or become involved in relationships with alcoholics or substance abusers. In addition, I conducted a training seminar for psychologists for the Maryland Psychological Association, on Adult Children of Alcoholics. I have seen many clients for Stopping Smoking and presented successful Smoking Cessation programs to organizations and law firms. As a volunteer, I have also presented seminars at the Maryland, DC and Virginia Lung Associations on Breathing and Smoking Cessation. I have helped clients with the Love Addiction and Gambling Addiction, and attend many seminars on Eating Disorders to learn the latest developments in the field. I have also helped many clients with Weight Loss. My Lose Weight Now program has been presented for organizations and is available on CD’s, Tapes and Bandcamp. I have also presented a radio program on Mindful Eating and led workshops on this topic. I offer regular free Zoom seminars, which can help individuals deal with Substance Abuse and weight loss.
