Some people believe that PTSD and trauma are lifetime conditions and cannot be treated. I'm happy to tell you that I offer Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), an evidence-based therapy which can resolve PTSD in an average of 12 sessions. Some people are hesitant to try therapy for their trauma or PTSD because they, understandably, don't want to talk about and relive the details of their trauma. The good news is that with CPT, you aren't asked to do this! The therapy focuses entirely on what you believe about the trauma, that is what you believe about why it happened and what it means about you and the world. I'm sure you have questions, so contact me to arrange for a free 15-minute telehealth (video) consultation. It's a good way for you to see if you might feel comfortable working with me.

I have been working with individuals who have trauma and PTSD for over 20 years. For many years this was my main focus and as a evidence-based therapist I learned many different ways of treatment and developed a hybrid approach that I taught to other therapist for years. I start by helping you reduce your symptoms, then if your willing we re-process your trauma and help you look at it in a different way by identifying what is your "stuck point" and working to move that along. That in itself can also reduce remaining symptoms. With what is left, I help you move forward with your remaining symptoms and do what make you happy, despite of your symptoms. It may make you anxious to do something but at the end of the day, the joy you felt makes it worth it. Again, remember, you would be doing this with much less anxiety than when you started therapy. This a is a proven approach that has worked with so many individuals with trauma.

An event, that can cause you to fear for your safety or your very life can happen to anyone. When such an event occurs, we are often so stunned by it, that we think “This isn’t supposed to happen to me or to someone I love. This only happens to other people.” There are a variety of ways to experience such a trauma: a car accident, sexual assault, robbery, witnessing an illness or death, domestic violence, being a soldier, being left abruptly by your spouse or parents, and experiencing severe weather catastrophes. Often when this happens, our bodies and minds do predictable things to protect ourselves. These symptoms might seem strange if you have never experienced them before.

Except for individuals who have a physical basis for their problems, trauma is always part of the history of an individual's symptoms. Trauma can be a stand-alone experience or a repetitive experience in an individual's life. After taking a thorough history, we will decide on a path to take - either CBT or psychodynamic.
