The question is how debilitating it is, how it is handled and resolved. You can expect that therapy will include an exploration to understand the specific symptoms you experience as well as a timeline of the onset of symptoms. It may be something you remember being a problem from since day 1, or it may have started following a difficult time in your life, where it was overwhelming and stressful to cope with day to day life. We will work to uncover the source of the thoughts that lead you to feel the way you do. Oftentimes, you may also be experiencing what feels like depression, which it might be. Sometimes though, anxious feelings can actually propel and create depressive symptoms. You may also be experiencing difficulty with your self-esteem. Self-esteem affects relationships, motivation, and often is a significant symptom in individuals with anxiety and depression. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is an evidenced based treatment which explores the connection between thoughts, feelings and behavior. We can rewire the brain and disconnect from having a negative default setting, and create new pathways with positive self-talk and specific steps to reach your goals. Many of my clients share that they have been able to feel a significant shift in their mindset through utilizing CBT and clearly state that therapy has changed their life.
