FREE consultations! Anxiety can take many forms, none of which are particularly pleasant or helpful, and all of which can be paralyzing and life-constricting at times. We can find ourselves worrying about just about everything under the sun, experiencing unrelenting physical tension and racing thoughts. Our anxiety can be about specific things or it can just be a general sense that 'something will go wrong.' Anxiety can have us avoid things, people, situations and can dominate our lives. If you're struggling with any form of anxiety, I can help. I will provide you with a safe, supportive place for you to tell me more about your experiences with anxiety and work with you to help reduce and even eliminate the impact that anxiety has on your life. My approach is practical and rooted in cognitive-behavioral therapy. My aim is to give you tools that you can use right away even from our very first sessions to start taming anxiety, calming your anxious brain, and start living with greater peace, safety, and enjoyment. Anxiety is one of the Goliaths of our time. There is no way around the mountain of pain and darkness; you have to go through in order to get to the light on the other side. The work I offer works to pull out all the tools to support you on the sometimes arduous trek toward inner peace. Part of being a spiritual warrior is having the courage to shine a light on the monsters that are keeping you stuck—to look at the obstacles to finding your self-culture squarely in the eye—and when you see the dark within, you have to name it, claim it and then transform it. This process is a kind of facing one's imagined demons so as to finally slay them! The feelings of turmoil, self doubt, insecurity are all part of the darkness that if left untouched will take over..... The only way to neutralize and transform any part of yourself that is causing you pain and grief is to completely and courageously shine a light on it and then systematically master it through a process of detecting it, disrupting it and eventually replacing it. Breathwork, visualization, thought logs, parts work, supplements, talk therapy as well as somatic focusing are all part of the tool box we draw from in order to neutralize anxiety holistically.

Persistent worries that easily get in the way of day to day functioning can prevent a person from going to work, from going out in public, and can result in having to live largely in agony. If you have ever felt nervousness or jittery, seek constant reassurance, are having difficulty sleeping being kept up by worrying, find yourself to be more self-critical than average, or are hypersensitive, there is a good chance you might be struggling from anxiety.

Fritz Perls, the psychiatrist and founder of Gestalt therapy has been credited with saying, ‘Fear is excitement without the breath'. People can often feel isolated and overwhelmed by anxiety and/or fear. Working together, we can uncover/access supports that can transform your experience in these moments and in turn offer you new possibilities and freedom. Ultimately, we cannot completely escape these feelings, but we can become more curious and learn to trust that they offer important information. EMDR is an evidence-based therapy that has been proven to work with symptoms including anxiety, phobias, and panic.

You are not alone. Especially in today’s hectic and fast-paced society, anxiety is experienced by most people at some point in their lives. Low levels of anxiety are usually considered normal and can even be motivating. However, when it becomes too much to bear and starts to affect your daily life, anxiety can cause and contribute to numerous mental and physical problems. It is important to know that anxiety and stress go hand-in-hand. When stress starts to build up in your life, you may feel anxious more often. This anxiety can develop into a disorder if left unchecked. Sometimes there is a clear precipitating factor, such as a traumatic event, that can lead to uncontrollable anxiety. However, most of the time people just experience a general feeling of constant unease, worry, fear, or agitation that persists over time. Whatever the cause, there is help available; no one has to suffer through this alone. How McDowall Integrative Psychology & Healthcare can help you. At McDowall Integrative Psychology & Healthcare, we take pride in providing our clients with a warm, confidential and safe environment so you will feel open to discuss whatever is on your mind. Making you feel comfortable each and every time you visit is very important to us. Some stress at work is normal, but if you find yourself under a lot of pressure and this negatively affects other areas of your life such as your social, personal, and physical domains, then you might benefit from our counselling services. We provide a confidential, compassionate, and non-judgmental environment where you can speak to one of our therapists about the issues you are experiencing. We will help you implement some coping strategies or improve your existing ones in order to improve your well-being, not simply during your work day but throughout the long-term. We look forward to working with you through the pressures you are facing and help strengthen your resilience to external and internal contributors of stress.

"The Gestalt perspective is inherently relational. Anxiety symptoms experienced in the body are understood as individual expressions of relational suffering (Roubal, Gecele, & Francesetti, 2013) when the individual’s process of contacting with other people lacks spontaneity and fluidity. In such cases, the style of interpersonal contact is rigidly distorted by fixed relational patterns, and needs are not being met within relationships. Relating to others and oneself according to a need to “do the right thing” could be one example of such distortions, narrowing the possibilities of experience and of creative adjustment (Robine, 2013). The flow of figure/ground formation becomes disrupted, because the person fears taking risks to find creative ways toward mutually satisfactory contact. While the arousal is present, the organism is inhibited or even paralyzed. In therapy, support is needed to transform anxiety into fluid and creative excitement. The support comes from the therapeutic relationship, in which the needs of the client are recognized and validated. In the safe therapeutic situation, the client’s inhibition is reduced and the arousal of her/his organism can be directed towards an expression of relationally felt needs. A client's experience could then be: “With the therapist I can risk being my way without judging it as right or wrong”. The paralyzing anxiety is transformed into an excitement of discovering new creative ways of contact. The client experiments with them first in the safe psychotherapeutic relationship and later also with other people (Herrera, Mstibovskyi, Roubal & Brownell, 2018)." If reading the above creates anxiety for you, you need to call me and come in feel what gestalt therapy can do. Reading about it is not helping is it? I didn't think so! Call me... let's be anxious together. You are not alone, yes I have had panic attacks before... thought I was going to die.
