Counsellor/Therapist, MA
Social anxiety is one of the most common anxiety disorders. Many people have some discomfort meeting new people, talking in front of a group, making or answering phone calls, and making small talk. Anxiety in social situations starts becoming a problem if it's causing you difficulties in work, school, with your family, keeping or making friends, or is very intense when you're in these situations. Using Cognitive Behavioural Therapy or Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, we will learn to accurately assess the fears you have in these situations, and learn skills to manage your anxiety when it does not match the threat of the situation. We will also work on interpersonal skills training to help with more accurate communicating if this is something you struggles with, as well as setting and maintaining boundaries and limits.

I don't dislike people, I just freeze up in that environment and can't move. I might even like people, but can't be sure because the idea of social scares me. Not sure about holding conversation or what to say at all? Unsure how to show up or leave? What if they don't like me? Oh no, what if they do? What part of social is anxiety forming? Conversation? Crowds? Family? All? Something else? It is just trying to tell you something, let's see if we can figure out what.

When working with social anxiety, I like to start with some mindfulness around the issue to gain a deeper understanding of the experience, from here there are many options, and I rely of the client's wisdom to guide me.
