Social Anxiety

Rachel Ann Dine

Licensed Professional Counselor, LPCC, LPC
Fears of what others think of you? Fears of walking in front of people, talking in front of people, or feeling like everyone is staring at you (even if on a logical level you know they are not)? Social anxiety is so real. And it can feel overwhelming. Not to mention, it can hold a person back in life from doing the things that bring you joy, or doing the things you know you need to do. I help women learn how to overcome the anxious thoughts that accompany social anxiety by offering a down to earth, realistic approach. We will examine and define the specific fears that may be happening for you, set realistic goals, and process through where these fears may be coming from--so you feel confident in getting your life back. Learn to tame the ever flowing thoughts and worries, find your inner peace, and gain mastery over combatting social anxiety with a provider who is invested in your wellness and sensitively helping you feel more capable and confident.

Challenge your negative and anxious thoughts. At times it may feel like there’s nothing you can do about the way you feel and how you think. In reality, though, there are a number of things that can help. Be mindful. Being mindful and practicing mindful meditation helps you to be present and aware of your thoughts and feelings in a non-judgmental and positive way. Go to a coffee shop. If you enjoy watching movies online or catching up on your favorite TV show, then try taking your tablet or laptop to your nearest coffee shop. Create an exposure hierarchy. Identify and rate how each social situation makes you feel in terms of anxiousness. For example, 0 would mean no anxiety, and 10 would be a full-blown panic attack. Don’t focus on yourself. It’s hard to stop the endless mind chatter when you’re in situations that make you particularly anxious. We often turn inward and focus on ourselves and how others will perceive us, almost always assuming it will be negative. Adopt a healthier lifestyle to reduce anxiety.

I provide a safe and non-judgmental space for individuals to explore the stories that the world has forced them to tell themselves about social interactions and their fears. Through reflective questioning, I guide clients in re-framing their narratives, identifying strengths, gifts, and alternative perspectives and I assist them in externalizing social anxiety to help them confront it and overcome its hold.
