Here at Denver Wellness Counseling we consider depression through the lens of neurobiology and the polyvagal system, meaning that depression is a hypo-arousal state and an attempt at self-regulation and self-preservation. Most people will experience Depression or Depressive symptoms at least once in their life, and normalizing this as a body's shut down response to extreme stress, loss, fear, panic, or grief can help de-stigmatize Depression and open the path for non-shame based healing. In therapy, working on depression can look many ways, but often includes components such as increasing awareness of the window-of-tolerance, exploring the origin and history of depressive symptoms, identifying and understanding contributing factors and life experiences (ex. negative self beliefs, loss, unhealed trauma, attachment wounds), applying healing methods (like EMDR) to these experiences, identifying and strengthening internal resources, learning to re-parent oneself, implementing self-care and tools for stabilization (somatic, grounding, relaxation), and integrating treatment gains into day-to-day experiences, self-identity, and relationships.
