Trauma and PTSD

Monica Buttafava

Counselor/Therapist, M.S., LMHC
Children and adolescents exposed to traumatic events such as abuse, violence, natural disasters, accidents, injury, or harm can develop health problems called Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, also known as PTSD. PTSD can happen in the first weeks after the event or even years later. Traumatic experiences can be re-experienced as PTSD symptoms in the form of “flashback” memories, nightmares, scary thoughts, panic attacks, physical distress, and pain. Individuals may also manifest problems falling or staying asleep, angry or cranky feelings, problems paying attention or focusing, be easily startled, and always being on high alert. Psychotherapy can help provide a safe place to share feelings, play out fears and worries, and address shame and guilty feelings related to the fact that children, unfortunately, tend to blame themselves for the traumatic events they have been victims of.

Trauma and PTSD

David Essel, M.S., O.M.

Counselor/Therapist, Master's Degree Psychology, Ordained All Faiths Minister
When most people think of PTSD, they think of veterans returning from war. Which is very true. Others might think of someone who had a near-drowning experience. And that will create PTSD as well. But there are other events in life that can create ongoing PTSD, that we may not even recognize. Childhood trauma. Divorce trauma. Addiction trauma. car accident trauma. The list is endless. For the past 30 years, number one best-selling author, counselor, master Life Coach and minister David Essel has been helping people to understand the power of trauma, PTSD, and the stress of trying to live with either.

Humans have a great capacity to survive some of the most horrendous and painful things possible; yet they do take their toll even months or years down the line. Carrying the burden of trauma and PTSD can be heavy, and one that you do not have to do alone. I bring specialized skills and training to help you carry that burden, and begin to learn skills that can serve you now (but probably were not available to you in the past) to help you live more freely. I work from a trauma-informed place with anyone seeking care for these issues. I also bring my expertise having spent years working with military veterans and many others using powerful tools such as Prolonged Exposure therapy to help you live with intention, purpose, and dignity.
