I have written a book Overcoming Your Addictions which shows you how to apply the principles of Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy and CBT to your self-defeating addictions. To overcome an addiction you first need to learn to accept yourself unconditionally with your addiction. Your self-defeating addictive behavior does not diminish your worth as a person. Putting yourself down will not help you overcome your addiction. Secondly, you need to learn to build your discomfort tolerance for urges, develop a healthy network of friends who will not lead you back to your addiction, and a vitally absorbing interest in life that makes your life meaningful.

Substance abuse addiction is a disease that affects not only the user but his or her family members. Abstinence does not solve the problem. Instead, I can help you and your family develop a new lifestyle that does require the use of mood-altering substances. Please read my book “Bulletproof Recovery” to know more about how my approach can help you achieve peace of mind and serenity.

Sushma Cheturvedula
Licensed Professional Counselor, MS, LPC
When it comes to addictions or substance abuse, I start by getting where the client is coming from—like, their feelings of not being good enough, anxiety, feeling down, and just not being satisfied with parts of their life. We dive into what makes them turn to substances and figure out better ways to handle their emotions and deal with stress. We also dig into any stuff from the past or issues in their relationships that might be playing into it. And if they're feeling lost about where life's headed, we tackle that too.
