As is the case with many psychological difficulties the first essential step is a rigorous diagnosis. In order to be diagnosed with a personality disorder a spread of personality traits must be disordered above the diagnostic threshold. The world standard in the diagnosis of personality disorder is the International Personality Disorder Examination (IPDE) published by the World Health Organization. If a diagnosis is made there are treatments available that can be successful, but there are no easy fixes.
A number of our Clinical Psychologists are experienced in helping people effectively live with Personality Disorders. One senior psychologist has extensive experience working with people who have had contact with the criminal justice system and helps people living with complex Personality conditions. We draw from evidence based therapies including; CBT, ACT, CFT, SFT, DBT, EMDR, systemic, narrative, psychodynamic and others.
The term personality disorders are frequently used, often out of context, in conversation to refer to a group of medical conditions. There is a lot of stigma and misunderstanding around this term. I have worked with individuals who have these conditions, and I have witnessed how they can be very challenging to manage.
