Self-esteem, and confidence, can be so fragile and we can allow it to be taken from us without knowing we have a choice. If you hear a version of yourself often enough, eventually you believe it. Positive attention throughout our childhood can carry us a long way, just as unhealthy attention can be just as far reaching. We live in a society that thrusts expectation in front of us nearly constantly, and trying to live up to it can be painful and demoralising.
