Clifton, New Jersey therapist: Dr. Mike Abrams, psychologist
Dialectical Behavior (DBT)

Dr. Mike Abrams

Psychologist, PhD, MBA, ABPP
I limit my practice to a few clients with whom I can offer meaningful help. I do not think it is ethical for a psychologist to agree to work with someone who has a problem outside of their expertise or someone who has barriers that the psychologist suspects they cannot overcome. When I conclude that I can help someone, I collaborate with them while applying the most appropriate methods for their problems. I choose these methods from among the many I have studied or developed. This is sometimes called a Transdiagnostic Integrative technique. Here, a clinical label or diagnosis is less important than the unique collection of symptoms a person is living with. I also make sure that I come to understand the client's point of view, how their adversities, their personal philosophy, and their level of suffering combine to lead to their anxiety, depressed mood, or even anger. When the client agrees, I prefer to use psychological testing to be sure my assessment of the client's situation is supported by the best available science. When I conduct psychotherapy, I know it can only be effective when I view the client as presenting many intricate problems that must be fully understood, so each client's issues are approached as scientific hypotheses that guide therapy, which guide my specific interventions, but is always open to revision as new life history information or psychological data becomes available. Since I have trained numerous therapists and continue researching and publishing in the field, my clients are assured they receiving the most effective evidence-based interventions. If you do see me, you can be confident that you will be unconditionally accepted in a safe and comfortable therapeutic relationship with every effort being made to help you.

Insight Psychological Group

Psychologist, Psy.D.s, LCSWs, LPCs, LCADCs...
We all live in the same world, and we depend on each other. Therapists are real people and also experience our currently reality as kind of messed up and quite stressful right now. But the talented therapist knows how to be patient and listen to your unique experience. Without any agenda, your therapist will follow your lead, and use their wealth of training, experience and expertise to be helpful to your situation. Insight Psychological Group (IPG) was founded in 2013 by Dr. David A. Helfgott based upon the simple premise: Psychotherapy is not purely a medical treatment; it is also an authentic human engagement. After years of successful work in his solo private practice, Dr. Helfgott sought to expand on his experience and invite other practitioners who shared his vision to create a large group of compassionate, uniquely skilled, and committed therapists offering quality, impactful psychotherapy in a way that reaches individuals deeply and lastingly. Part of the uniqueness of IPG also lies in the way it creates a supportive, therapeutic, and collegial environment for its practitioners which fosters self-reflection, peer consultation, and emotional support to ensure that its practitioners are consistently operating at the peak level of their ability and never suffer “burn out” or “compassion fatigue.” This greatly improves each therapist’s work with their clients; clients can sense a calmer, more open, receptive and thoughtful therapist sitting in front of them, and this makes for much better outcomes. Quality therapy is not an impersonal application of manualized procedures for discrete collections of symptoms; it is an unparalleled, multilayered interface between the help-seeking individual and the engaged and attuned therapist, which over time, promotes the individual’s personal growth and psychological health. Additionally, in solo practices, practitioners may find themselves facing new or complex situations with clients that ethically or even legally require consultation with their peers to ensure proper treatment. Solo practitioners may also encounter clients in periods of immense emotional pain and distress, sometimes tearing at the deepest heartstrings of the therapist. IPG’s approach addresses both issues. Strictly confidential consultation between therapists enables a clinician to remain strong, resilient and prepared to return to the consultation room, refreshed and ready for the next client. At IPG, clients can sense this atmosphere of support and nurturance through the open, honest, and inviting demeanor their therapist always maintains.

Licensed Mental Health Counselor, LMHC, LPC
I specialize in working with individuals (children, teens and adults) and couples, and I am incredibly passionate about the work I do and the people with whom I have the honor to work. My areas of expertise are anxiety / stress, relationship challenges, conflict resolution, intrusive negative thoughts and patterns, loss/grief and depression. Most clients and couples choose to work with me because they are looking for nontraditional therapy that provides them with concrete skills to improve their everyday lives and/or address specific concerns. Holistic and integrative in my approach, I believe that there is no "one size fits all" in therapy. Therefore, I uniquely tailor therapy sessions to meet each client's needs and goals. With extensive experience and training in results oriented and solutions focused cognitive therapies, positive psychology, mindfulness, Buddhist Psychology, Gottman Method for Couples, meditation, and yoga, I offer creative approaches that result in meaningful change and growth.
