Grief is the process of reacting to a loss. This loss could be physical (death of a loved one), social (such as a divorce), or occupational (such as work-related). An individual experiencing grief may have conflicted feelings and may experience fluctuations in symptoms throughout their process. Often times, individuals might feel as though they have accepted the loss and have gotten closure. However, later on they may begin to experience grief again and that is okay. Closure is not a one-time thing, it can happen over the course of weeks, months, or even years. Sometimes we are able to gain closure on certain aspects of the loss, and other parts may take a bit longer. Individuals may find that their emotional reaction changes and fluctuates, and can entail different emotions and behaviors. Feelings of sadness can also begin to intensify as the individual begins to yearn to be with the loved one again. Psychotherapy can be effective in helping an individual overcome grief by allowing the individual to come to terms with the loss, to help work through pain and grief, and help to learn how to move forward and adapt to a life without the loved one. Psychotherapy can also help you to find ways to maintain a connection with the loss. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy approaches have been successful in helping to treat grief and loss. Additionally, Relaxation Techniques and Mindfulness-based interventions, may also be helpful. Book an appointment today! Overcoming grief and loss can feel overwhelming. It can impact various aspects of your overall well-being. It is important to seek help from a mental health professional in order to overcome grief. Grief and loss is just one of the areas that LifeCycle Counselling specializes in.

Being alive means experiencing inevitable loss, which is normally followed by grief and recovery. The loss can be the loss of a person, image, ideal, or even a hope. However, the grief and recovery can sometimes be complicated. Every person follows a unique pattern of grief processing. The key for a healthy recovery lies in understanding this pattern in a supported environment. The therapy is about helping the client to get to this insight. Schedule a free 15-minute consultation to see if we are a good fit.

Grief can be one of the most gut-wrenching feelings we may experience as humans. Grief can affect how we see ourselves, how we see the world, what we value, and what we want. Whether you are grieving loss of a life, a relationship, a job, our physical health, ideas of how our life would look, or anything else, I provide support to process difficult feelings, engage in self-care, establish new parts of your identity, and determine boundaries that feel right for you. I recognize that there is no "right" way to grieve and hold space for whatever it looks like for you.

In today's society, we are expected to "suck it up and move on" in situations related to loss. However, grief has a mind of its own. It shows up when we least expect it and can linger a lot longer than we want. It comes back again and again, even when we thought we've dealt with it. . Time does heal, and therapy can help. Over the course of our lives, we experience various losses and we grieve in many different ways. It can be difficult to know how to begin working through grief and you do not have to be alone in this process. I believe that grieving is a journey and I welcome the opportunity to support you in your path to healing. Within therapy, we can explore some of the emotions you are experiencing, unpack expectations about what grieving looks like, discuss possibilities for connection with what’s most important within your life, and consider possible ways to honour the loss(es) you have experienced. To lose and mourn those we love and care for is one of the fundamental givens of these human lives we lead. Grief is like an ocean tide: the ebb and flow - an ongoing, non-linear process that involves many phases of feeling, remembering and making meaning from these experiences. Therapy can provide a space to grapple with the both the immediate and life-long experience of grief as well as with the existential anxiety that can result when we confront death as a universal truth.
