Beatrice Ochieng
Counselor/Therapist, CCATP, LCPC
Depression can feel like falling headlong into a dark bottomless pit with no hope for survival. It comes with hopelessness and helplessness, sleeplessness and tearfulness, lack of motivation and loss of interest in previously enjoyed activities, to name just but a few. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is effective in treating depression, sometimes in combination with medication.

The term "Depression" isn't just a medical term having to do with lack of adequate Seratonin in the brain. Did you know that there are actually more Seratonin receptors in our digestive tract than in our brains? Depression means that someone's nervous system got overloaded from being in "survival mode" for so long that it sort of shuts down or at least slows down. Depression really means "depleted and defeated" and doesn't just happen overnight. Treating Depression without medication is possible in mild to moderate cases and I strongly encourage clients to try non-medication methods first. Medications are not without risk or side effects so unless a person is suicidal, I discourage use of medication. Other natural methods to treat Depression can include acupuncture (I can provide a referral), natural supplements that don't cause harm, and lifestyle changes such as increasing exercise, yoga, improving diet, getting adequate quality sleep, drinking more water, and exploring some kind of spiritual path or community. Depression symptoms can take a while to improve and will require diligent effort on the part of the client but it really can improve!
