Sometimes we like doing things a lot; if this brings us pleasure, it is a positive thing in our lives. However, there are times when liking things a lot gets out of control-- be it gambling, ingesting substances, playing video games, or having sex. The term 'life balance' is almost tautological. To have a fulfilled life, it should be in balance. The good news is that sex is a behaviour, and psychologists are well versed in helping you change your behaviour. You can regain control of your choices.
All of our Clinical Psychologists at ComposurePsychology are experienced in working with and sensitive to people living with concerns about sex including sexual identify, addiction to having sex, overuse of porn or porn addiction. Dr Janine Hayward has experience working in an NHS sexual health clinic where she supported people to overcome these concerns and feel happier about their life and sexual selves. We draw from evidence based therapies including; CBT, ACT, CFT, SFT, DBT, EMDR, systemic, narrative, psychodynamic and others.
Like any addiction, sex and sexuality can be used as ways to numb pain and create distance from the scariness of true intimacy, especially when earlier life have been interrupted by traumas, disrupted attachments, or confusing relationships. When we heal our relationship to sex, sexuality and intimacy, we can gain greater trust, ability to be seen and understood in our relationships and to see and understand others. Working in tandem with a 12 step programme isn't for everyone, but can be a great help here if that appeals to you.
We have helped many of our clients resolve their addictions - including love and sex addiction. We can help you overcome your issues using a combination of hypnotherapy and mindfulness therapies.
