Social anxiety is certainly an area of speciality and interest for me as a clinical psychologist. I aim to help the client understand their anxiety better and to develop effective ways of managing anxiety. Anxiety can really get in the way of living and experiencing life the way we want, and my work is focused on helping clients develop the ability to once again move in valued directions without anxiety being in control any more.

Psychologist, Clinical Psychologists, Neuropsychologists, General Psychologists, Art Therapy, Mental Health Social Work
Are you or your child experiencing anxiety? Anxiety can be expressed in many different ways but often involves the way we think (e.g., worst case scenario thinking), physically feel (e.g., heart racing, shaking, upset tummy, headaches, breathing changes etc.) and what we do or don't do (e.g., avoiding places, people or what we say or do). Our team will work alongside you to understand your anxiety, teach you about the nature of anxiety and give you tools to overcome it (e.g., relaxation tools, mindfulness, breathing techniques, problem solving, cognitive restructuring etc)

A psychodynamic approach goes beyond the symptom and tries to understand how and why anxiety and fears have become dominant in a person's life. They may be an expression of deeper feelings of anger or disappointment that cannot be expressed and are best understood in relation to early childhood and personal history.

Stress doesn’t just happen instantaneously, it is a series of events, reactions and actions, which all build on each other. Sometimes I talk to clients about a truck travelling on the highway. As the journey starts there is nothing much in the trailer, but as the journey continues, the trucker picks up various loads until the vehicle is just about carrying its maximum load and it can continue on the highway for a long time like this – travelling along with a heavy load but within the legal limit. What happens next is usually just a minor addition to the load – something tiny that in and of itself is irrelevant but is just enough to tip the scale so that the vehicle is now travelling over the recommended tonnage. Once overloaded, there is more pressure on the tyres, the truck can pick up too much speed going downhill – there are various systems that don’t work as quickly easily or effectively as they would under ‘normal’ circumstances. And this is pretty much what can happen to us. So although there can be a very major or significant event that creates a big stress load, most times, stress builds up over time.
When working with clients, and in my own self work, I have found it makes change much easier to achieve, with smaller steps.

The pressure to 'be' something in the world can be overwhelming. Add to that the distress of what's happening in our ecosystem and, through that lens, having anxiety absolutely makes sense.
When it comes to the climate crisis, feelings such as anxiety, guilt, terror, grief, anger, despair and helplessness are not something to be fixed or cured. They are healthy, appropriate responses. They show that you care.
My experience is that anxiety and fear often come from needing, but not being able, to predict the future. And the fear of the fear itself can be debilitating. It doesn't have to be that way.
We work to bring your body on board so that your mind can take a break from its catastrophic thought cycles. Bringing the body on board also helps to build your supports and your ground and to soothe your weary mind.

Counselling and Psychotherapy Yarraville
Counsellor/Therapist, PhD, MEd, BEd, BA, Dip T, Dip Counselling, Dip Hypnotherapy
The anxiety and fear-like symptoms you experience are neurobiological symptoms. Your amygdala - the part of the brain that registers and records emotional responses, is sending you false brain messages. In this case, it's sending the message of 'threat' and 'danger'. Once, often out-of-the-blue, you felt your heart racing, your palms sweating and your tummy churning. You FELT...terrified. Maybe that first experience was on a freeway, in an elevator (lift), on a suburban train. The next time you had to face that 'event' (get back into that lift/elevator), your amygdala sent adrenaline surging through your body to GET OUTTA THERE. That's your brain getting things wrong. We can and will re-write that message.
