Dr. Mike Abrams

Psychologist, PhD, MBA, ABPP
My online therapy sessions are structures to be quite similar to in person counseling. Most clients I see remotely report that they have benefited as well as they would have in person. In addition, I have utilized Zoom and related media before COVID as I have taught psychology classes and continuing education courses online for many years.

Some might look at an online therapy relationship as being inauthentic or diluted but I strive to build relationships that are quite the opposite in my online therapy practice. My goal is to create a space where my client feels safe, encouraged, understood and empowered. A space where the integrity of the therapeutic relationship is paramount. I have found that being in the comfort of your chosen space while sharing in mine, clients and I are able to create a relationship built on trust which enhances the ability to be vulnerable, along with flexibility and a shared convenience between us. In all, these factors allow for a therapeutic environment that leads to high levels of accomplishment in whatever area of concern/s is being addressed.

I believe we all have the capacity to both change and achieve the sense of fulfillment, strength and confidence we desire. While I support a variety of client-challenges, I specialize in life transitions, relationships, personal growth, school or career struggles and all that comes with it. I help clients identify their strengths and connect to their values and purpose as they navigate any challenge, while providing encouragement and insight along the way. We go through many phases throughout life, each with their own joys and struggles. Together, we will set attainable and strategic goals combined with a plan to get there. Flexibility, trust, and openness are key to the experience because each client is unique and there is no “one size fits all” approach. I want to support you as you seek meaning in your life, face challenges, and write your story. Whether you’re just beginning your journey in therapy or continuing the process, I am looking forward to learning about you and providing support as you pursue your goals and dreams.

The negative stories that society tells people of color impact their self worth, comfort in their own skin, and relationships. My practice focuses on rewriting those narratives so clients can understand their lived experience, challenge internalized beliefs, and heal from the impacts of racial oppression. As a psychotherapist, I work to empower the disempowered through an anti-racist, anti-oppressive, and intersectional approach. My focus is creating a space for clients to be unapologetically themselves, while gaining the confidence to navigate the world around them. My clients are mainly Black women, Muslim women, and women of color struggling with self love, self esteem, colorism, hair stigma, and intersectionality. Women of color are hit the hardest with race-related stress. And yet, they seldom have the proper resources or tools to heal. In my practice, I help clients disrupt the intergenerational trauma that continues impacting them. When dealing with race related stressors in a world that dismisses these struggles, it’s easy to become discouraged. You don’t need to feel ashamed of your experiences, feelings, or identity. Let’s write a new story together.

It's easy for you to sense other people's feelings, but sometimes you feel misunderstood. You may overthink things, or you may be so intuitive that you can't tune out the noise of daily life. The gift of being highly sensitive can also come with internal struggles that may be hard for others to understand. My knowledge of trauma-informed care and behavioral health, coupled with my creative background in yoga and art therapy, allows me to provide support expert to highly sensitive people. I use an eclectic approach that fully honors and recognizes the powerfully interwoven connection between mind, body, spirit, and heart. Together, we create a safe space that encourages the exploration of feelings and the formation of a brand-new story founded on personal strength, hope, and resilience. I spend considerable time getting to know my clients and adapting my approach to validate their individuality. Through a combination of intuitive and research-based techniques, I’ll empower you to move beyond the challenges and barriers that have been holding you back from living your best life. The language of therapy has become ubiquitous in our culture. While the therapist in me appreciates this development, particularly if it is accompanied by a destigmatizing of mental health care, I understand some of the skepticism some might feel regarding therapy in general. For example, it is worth asking: How is it that our society seems increasingly alienated and atomized, even as acknowledgment of trauma and ideas pertaining to emotional healing gain prominence in our discourse? Given all of this focus on self-care and wellness, why does it seem like so many of us feel more alone and lost than ever? Certainly, this dynamic is in part due to larger structural forces that shape our lives in ways both obvious and imperceptible. But rest assured, therapy absolutely can be a force for good, so long as we never lose sight of the paramountcy of human connection and avoid retreating into narcissism. My approach to therapy is integrative, with an emphasis on relational work and psychodynamic principles and application. I offer a warm, non-judgmental, and non-authoritarian space where we will identify the feelings and assumptions that generate the self-defeating patterns preventing you from experiencing joy and fulfillment in your life. So many of us desire to feel more connected, less anxious, and less alienated, but we simply do not know how to achieve this reality. This is especially true for some of us who have experienced attachment disruptions, or even more severe forms of trauma. Or, perhaps we see a path forward, but that path vanishes suddenly without warning and is replaced by malaise and renewed uncertainty, or, even worse, despair. Our work together will focus on developing that path in such a way where it will endure even in the face of adversity and the intrusion of the past into the present.

Licensed Clinical Social Worker, LMSW
By creating a therapeutic space for mental, emotional, and spiritual healing and well-being, we allow for post-traumatic growth and resilience, encouraging us to adapt and thrive. Engaging in therapy can further improve our resilience and coping resources, allowing us to heal from experiences of grief, trauma, loss, and bereavement, which naturally engender existential and spiritual crises. Healing is itself a process and a journey to be honored and respected. It is hoped that through greater awareness, understanding, and acceptance of this delicate process one may embrace healing in a way that is personally meaningful. In order to provide a space for healing to unfold, I meet clients where they are at while listening with empathy, compassion, and understanding. By developing a strong client-therapist connection, while fostering a supportive environment, we will work together to help you achieve your goals. While taking the next step in choosing to engage in therapy may seem overwhelming, it is helpful to know it can be highly rewarding. By understanding our deepest needs and nourishing our growth potential, we are able to achieve greater acceptance, life direction, and inner peace.
