Strides in Psychotherapy

Psychologist, PSY.D.
here are many different ways to be an effective and nurturing parent. People’s parenting styles may vary based on culture, race, religion, socioeconomic status, geographic location as well as due to both the parents’ and the children’s personalities. Some people tend to be more authoritarian, setting rules and expecting them to be followed because you are the parent. Other parents are more permissive, wanting their children to have their needs met and to feel heard and understood. Still others try to find some middle ground. They may switch positions depending on the specifics of the situation or they may negotiate a compromise. Sometimes one parenting style works really effectively with one child but not at all with another. Other times, a way of handling a situation may work fine for your child at one age but not at all once they get a bit older, so a shift in approach is needed. We all tend to use our own upbringing as a model for how we parent, or in some cases, for what we most want to avoid in raising our children. Often, this strategy works fine. When it does not, therapy can be a useful tool in offering you alternative strategies and techniques that might help.

Are you a parent overwhelmed by raising your child? Are you struggling to remain calm and patient with your kids when situations are tough, leaving you feeling guilty and remorseful? Are you feeling frustrated and hopeless with your child, not knowing how to help them change certain behaviors they exhibit? Having a child can stimulates more feelings than any other life situation. In our children, we see parts of ourselves; in our parenting of them, we see our own histories of how we were raised, which can be painful and confusing at times. As a mother, I understand the complicated mix of emotions that is stimulated by being a parent. We can be pulled in different directions in our parenting, at times responding to our own childhood hurts. Becoming conscious of these patterns can open potential for new and more joyous ways of being with our children. I offer therapy to parents as well as to children and adolescents.

Dealing with difficult children and teens is not something we sign up for when first imagining ourselves as parents. Most parents are not adequately prepared for the excruciating full-time job of raising children, and the honest parent knows this. Guided by research, evidence based practice, and wisdom, our practitioners will help craft new ways of regaining control in one's family, and in the process create a much more healthy environment for one's children to grow and develop.

I love to work with couples in conflict, frustrated parents, and teens and kids who are struggling in school or struggling with their family. At Resolution Counseling Center, we take a family-centered approach that relies on a strong partnership with parents. We acknowledge you as the expert on your child and the one with the power to create a healthier home and school life for them. I'll help us start with a thorough assessment of what's going on, we'll create a customized plan for your child's wellness, then we'll work through the plan, using a combination of play therapy and child-oriented sessions and parent-only feedback and strategy sessions. I'll walk with your family until things are in a better place. Reach out anytime.
