Collaborative Care Therapy

Registered Psychotherapist, Registered Social Workers and Psychotherapists
Grief is a deeply personal and often complex process that can encompass a wide range of emotions and experiences. At Collaborative Care Therapy, we offer a compassionate, integrative, and relational approach to grief therapy, recognizing that each person's journey through grief is unique. In our therapy sessions, we provide a safe and empathetic environment for individuals to express and process their feelings of loss. We understand that grief can arise from various forms of loss - not just the death of a loved one, but also the loss of relationships, health, dreams, or identity. Our approach is trauma-informed, acknowledging that grief can sometimes trigger or intertwine with past traumas and emotional wounds. Our therapists utilize a variety of therapeutic techniques to support you through your grief journey. This includes narrative therapy, which helps in reauthoring one’s life story in the wake of loss, and cognitive-behavioral therapy to address challenging thought patterns that may arise during grieving. We also incorporate mindfulness practices to help manage the intensity of emotions and foster a gentle self-awareness during this difficult time. Our goal at Collaborative Care Therapy is to support you in navigating the grieving process in a way that honors your loss and the range of emotions you may be experiencing. We work collaboratively with you to find a path forward that respects your individual process, helping you to integrate the experience of loss into your life in a meaningful way. Through our virtual therapy sessions, we offer the comfort and convenience of connecting with you wherever you are, providing a consistent source of support as you move through the stages of grief. With Collaborative Care Therapy, you’re not alone in your journey through grief; we are here to walk alongside you, offering guidance, understanding, and hope for healing.

Grief is a normal and adaptive process, and as such, does not necessarily need treatment. However, some people feel that their feelings of grief are overwhelming. Others feel ‘stuck’ in their grief and would like to talk to someone. The focus of grief therapy is to help you to work through your feelings of grief, to feel supported, and to help you regain a sense of control, and move forward in your life in a way that feels appropriate to you. Treatment length at MindFit depends on how a person is currently functioning, and how impairing feelings of grief are on daily activities. It may range from 6 to 16 sessions. During treatment, members work with clincians on a number of strategies, which may include understanding the grief process and telling one’s grief story, identifying and modifying unhelpful thoughts or beliefs, carving out time to process the one’s feelings, becoming re-engaged in activities, relaxation and mindfulness strategies, assertive communication skills, self-compassion exercises, and/or identifying and working on one’s values. Our coaches can work with you on tasks that can help in the grieving process, such as writing about your grief, managing through ‘firsts,’ creating rituals or memories in honour of a loved one, etc.

Disenfranchised grief or complicated grief are some of my specialities with grief. Disenfranchised grief is: "not openly acknowledged or publicly supported through mourning practices or rituals because the experience is not valued or counted [by others] as a loss". This grief can be very isolating, and complicated grief can also be isolating. I am glad to meet for a consultation to hear your story - you do not need to do this alone.

Losing someone close to us can be among the most painful of life experiences. An example of one of my approaches to working with grieving clients involves learning how to live with the pain and loss along with finding ways to honor the life and memory of the bereaved. However, grief is a largely personal process, with many different types of loss that each require their own unique approach and attentiveness depending on what feels best for clients during this most vulnerable time. The grieving process is unique to each individual, with no set timeline or roadmap. It is a journey marked by waves of emotions, memories, and adjustments to life without what was lost. I offered self-care practices, compassionate listening, and honoring your memories of the loss to help you heal and accept. We go through the Stages of Grief and Loss.

Grief is one of the most painful feelings we will ever experience. It comes and goes in waves, sometimes bringing us to our knees unable to breath, and other times leaving us feeling almost normal (with or without accompanying guilt). Whatever the circumstances of your loss, grief is not meant to be experienced alone. Whether through family, community, friendship, or faith, we must find a way to live with shattered dreams, and the pervasive ache of loss. When help is needed, we are here for you. Reach out today to help us find the right person to support you at this time.

In today's society, we are expected to "suck it up and move on" in situations related to loss. However, grief has a mind of its own. It shows up when we least expect it and can linger a lot longer than we want. It comes back again and again, even when we thought we've dealt with it. . Time does heal, and therapy can help. Whether you have lost a loved one through death or a relationship ending, have gone through a difficult life transition or are grieving the loss of something else important to you, we'll help you heal grief in a supportive, non-judgmental & compassionate space. Our society does not provide us with a language or many rituals/practices to process grief or loss on an individual level or as a collective. Grief can occur in so many traditionally unmarked instances in our lives, from the loss of a job/career, relationship breakup, relocation of home, loss of a pet, family member, friend, colleague or loved one. Often we can feel very alone in our grief as a result. Grief and loss can bring up a whole range of emotions, and trigger losses we have experienced in the past. I will work with you to understand your experience of grief as it is a very individual process, normalize what you're feeling and going through, and provide a safe space for you to process and reconcile your grief. We'll work together to discover a new normal after loss. It will take time, but I want you to know that you're not alone in this.

When we lose someone, through death or in some other way, we need someone to talk to. Someone who listens and strives to understand as we work though the often complex and confusing range of emotions that loss and grief bring. Most of all we need someone to be there who can be steady and accept the intense pain that we carry, the rage, the sadness, all of it. Eventually something inside can lighten. Perhaps it doesn't go away, but it hurts less. We can tolerate it. Manage it. Life opens again.
