Nick Morecroft Trauma Counselling
Counsellor/Therapist, MBACP
I feel trauma underlies many of the issues we deal with in adult life. Simply put, trauma is a natural response to stress that forces us to change our behaviour in order to survive. It is a mechanism to keep us safe in the dangerous environments of our ancestors. Due to the way it works, we can often be left with fears from past situations presenting themselves repeatedly at times when there really isn't any danger. Our mind/body generalises about situations that might be close to the past times of stress and can cause a lot of overreaction. Without being addressed, we continue to react in these unhelpful ways and can actually strengthen the fearful reactions through repeat behaviours. Trauma focussed therapy helps to break these reactive behaviours, delivering healing work to the parts originally wounded, dissolving the fear reactions and helping build new healthy reactions.

Bristol Trauma Therapy
Therapist
My name is Heather Bradley and I am a Trauma Therapist. Having worked in this area for over 10 years I do understand just how radically experiencing trauma can impact your life and create feelings of loneliness, confusion and despair. PTSD and CPTSD can leave you feeling so out of control impacting relationships, work and your relationship with yourself. Together we journey from where you are now to a life that has clarity, meaning and purpose. Flashbacks, night terrors, panic attacks, going numb, spacing out, leaving your body etc can all become a thing of the past as you gain control over your life and live in the present moment more. I work in such a way that traumatic memories are resolved at the root and stored differently in your brain. This means when you are triggered, the memory is no longer "live" to flash back to. We understand on a deep level that the trauma is over and you are safe. I also work with what we store in the body. Implicit memories are tough because we find out body reacting to things that we might not consciously know about. We can work with this too and bring you back to feeling safe in your body. I have personally overcome my own Traumas and CPTSD and so I truly know how daunting this journey is but also I truly know what is possible to achieve. For more information please feel free to visit my website and reach out to me for a free informal chat where we can see if we are a good fit for one another therapeutically. You can also ask me any questions you may have about doing therapy together. I very much look forward to hearing from you. With warm wishes, Heather.

Shareen Birges
Registered Social Worker, BASS, GDYMH, MSW
I have an extensive background in trauma through my work with young people & adults around sexual abuse/assault, domestic violence & childhood trauma/neglect. My trauma informed practice gives me the basis for understanding & supporting people through trauma. My experience has helped me to understand that trauma is a very unique & individualized experience. For some people, trauma can appear small or unimportant (like a car accident) however to me, all trauma is experienced by the individual as traumatic for them, so whether it is perceived by others as small or unimportant it is important, & valid, for the person for whom the experience was traumatic. I have found that this understanding has been vital in my trauma work & has helped me to support people with all types of trauma. Building the therapeutic relationship, again, is important in this work to create a collaborative, safe & comfortable environment for my clients to share & heal.

Sometimes human beings are faced with truly horrible situations: threat, a fear of death, or witnessing such events. A normal response to these situations is severe psychological disturbance. However, such disturbance usually remits within weeks. Unfortunately for some people the psychological disturbance lasts months, years, and sometimes a lifetime. These disturbances include nightmares, intrusive thoughts, avoidance of situations that resemble the trauma, difficulty relating to other people, withdrawal from social life, and in extreme cases dissociation from reality. The two most common psychological conditions associated with this disturbed response are Posttraumatic Stress Disorder and Adjustment Disorder. Psychologists have had more than a hundred years of experience in dealing with these difficulties. In the First World War it was described as shell shock. In the Second World War it was known as combat fatigue. We now know that it is not only those who engage in combat who suffer from these disorders. What we are increasingly understanding is that posttraumatic experiences are a disturbance of memory: the disturbance is that we simply cannot forget the horror we have experienced. Psychologists have developed clear treatment pathways to assist the victims of trauma.

I don't have one approach to dealing with trauma. As everyone's trauma is unique, so is the way that we work with it together. Sometimes this involves going back in our minds and unpacking what happened while bringing a sense of safety to the trauma. Sometimes we don't go back to the trauma at all, and instead work with the unhelpful narrative that the trauma may have left you believing. I gently guide you to express your experience in whatever way you need to, so that you can start to feel safer and calmer within your life.

Dr Aneliya Gonsard
Psychologist, DClinPscy, MSc, BA
Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are unfortunately way more common than many people think. A strong link has been found my many studies between ACEs and physical and mental health problems in later life. Traumatic experiences can also take place in adolescence and adulthood. For some, the impact is greatly distressing and life-limiting, such as in the cases of having post-traumatic-stress disorder.
Many of the people I have come to work with have lived through often multiple adversities and traumatic experiences, throughout their lives. I offer a confidential space where we can think together about the way such experiences have affected you and the parts of you that can change and develop in order to integrate and move on from past traumas.
