Since the pandemic shook our world and the experience of how we connect with others, I have been practicing remotely. I have found that teletherapy has been as effective as meeting in person in terms of relationship building, creating a safe space, and communicating openly, honestly, and directly. For many clients with busy lives, online therapy reduces the obstacles of travel, traffic, and parking, and provides a simple way of managing billing/payment.

With technology, you can experience all the benefits of in-person therapy on secure, easy-to-use, high-quality internet platforms. Online sessions allow you to do therapy in the comfort of your own home or allow you flexibility in environments that best suit you. It can be especially helpful to those who find it challenging to travel to an office for appointments due to location, work, children at home, lifestyle, or other practical or personal reasons.
While there are multiple ways that counseling can take place online, I work primarily with face-to-face video conferencing via Zoom and, on occasion, telephone sessions.
I always hold my sessions in a quiet and confidential space, giving you the same confidentiality & professionalism that you experience within an office setting.
Most, if not all, of my clients, find virtual sessions to be highly effective and convenient. They allow for the comfort and safety of therapy in your own space, and no travel time is often less vulnerable than needing to go to an office. Research of multiple studies finds that online therapy is equally effective as in-person for most cases. That being said I always advocate for what works best for each individual and it is wonderful to have choices to find your best path whichever that may be.
If you are not super-computer savvy or are anxious about how to use technology, I will work to make it as seamless as possible. I have chosen a platform that is easy to use and I am happy to assist you with any questions or concerns.
A common concern I hear from clients regarding online therapy is finding a quiet and/or confidential space when you’re homebound with children and/or family members or roommates. Be sure and scope this out in advance so you are guaranteed quiet and privacy during your session.
Since it is so convenient many times people forget to allow themselves a few minutes to "switch hats" and allow themselves a few breaths and get settled into being present and in the head/body space for your session.
Headphones or Airpods can often make audio clearer or ensure more privacy but are not necessary.
Given that video sessions can be conducted on your smartphone, clients have found it helpful to go to a park, sit in their car in the driveway, and/or walk around your neighborhood. Get creative and support yourself. Find a private space that allows you to receive support no matter where you are.
You are welcome to have pets join your space if you find that comforting, and supporting, and you may see my fellow feline/canine therapists join in one of our sessions on my end.

Susan Spicer
Psychologist, PhD
In my online therapy practice, I specialize in EMDR therapy as a transformative approach to assist individuals in their journey towards healing from trauma and narcissistic abuse, ultimately guiding them back to a place of self-love and emotional equilibrium. The lingering effects of childhood physical, emotional, or sexual abuse, along with the enduring impact of narcissistic abuse, can become deeply entrenched within the body, leading to symptoms of depression, anxiety, hypervigilance, and challenges in navigating relationships and daily life.
I employ a video platform known as remotEMDR, which is specifically designed to facilitate EMDR therapy. This innovative approach aims to reshape the way these distressing memories are stored in the brain, fostering resolution and inner peace. To complement this therapy, I incorporate mind-body practices such as mindfulness, meditation, and breathwork, all of which serve to amplify the healing process.
Drawing on my background as a neuropsychologist, I possess the expertise to help individuals identify their blind spots, condition their thoughts, and ultimately rewire their brains for enduring happiness and success. My mission is to provide a comprehensive and holistic approach to healing that empowers individuals on their path to transformation and well-being.
