Treatment Approach

  • Behavioral Therapy Uses learning techniques like reinforcement and practice to change unwanted behaviors. It is often applied to phobias, anxiety, and habits.
  • Biopsychosocial Therapy Takes into account biological, psychological, and social factors in understanding mental health. It looks at the whole person, not just symptoms.
  • Eclectic Therapy Draws from different therapeutic methods based on what fits each client best. It is flexible and personalized rather than following one single model.
  • Experiential Therapy Involves hands-on activities to bring emotions into the present moment. It helps clients process feelings more deeply than through conversation alone.
  • Feminist Therapy Addresses how gender roles, power, and social inequality affect mental health. It empowers clients to challenge limiting beliefs and systems.
  • Integrative Therapy Combines techniques from multiple approaches into a customized plan. It adapts to each client’s unique situation and needs.
  • Interpersonal Therapy (IPT) A short-term approach focused on improving relationships and social support. It is often used for depression and grief.
  • Object Relations Therapy Focuses on how early caregiver relationships shape current relationships. It aims to improve patterns of attachment and trust.
  • Psychodynamic Therapy Explores unconscious thoughts and patterns that influence current behavior. It builds insight into how the past impacts the present.
  • Psychoeducational Therapy Provides education and coping tools about mental health conditions. It empowers clients with knowledge and practical skills.
  • Psychosocial Therapy Looks at how social and environmental factors affect psychological health. It emphasizes relationships, community, and resilience.
  • Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT) Focuses on solutions and future goals rather than past problems. It is practical, short-term, and goal-driven.
Approach Description: I work with your relationship with food & how it may lead to weight concerns, overeating & body image challenges. Susan D'Addario Practice Description
Hi, I'm Susan D'Addario, LCSW & Certified Eating Psychology Coach. For the past 20+ years, I've worked with people's internal hurts, conflicts & challenges. Whether focusing on difficulties in self-esteem, relationships, family issues, work/career, depression, anxiety, etc., such exploration frequently lead to new understandings & eventual working through. My focus has now turned to helping people who are overweight. At the Institute for the Psychology of Eating, I have been specially trained to coach all types of people with food, eating & body image challenges. This involves looking at one’s life issues that may be influencing overeating. It's not enough to tell someone what to eat. Anyone can read the latest fad diet book & have some short-term success. But, therein lies the problem. The success is short-lived which can lead to frustration, anger & hopelessness. To lose weight for the long haul, it's imperative to address our eating challenges from the inside out. Our relationship with food & eating is personal. Eventually the issues that got us turning to food in the first place will rise up again. Compassionate exploration is needed to unveil the specific blockades that get in our way of having a healthy relationship with food. I also offer Mind-Body Nutrition, which speaks to how emotions greatly influence our body's ability to digest & assimilate food. Did you know: • If we eat too quickly, our body will not benefit from that food • Our brain needs 20 min to process that we've eaten • If we eat while stressed, insulin & cortisol will rise. Both add to fat gain & lean body tissue loss • The time of day we eat supports our efforts for sound health & a leaner body • Our “gut brain” is linked to our brain proper & will shut down digestion when under stress My vast experience as a therapist, along with my training as an Eating Psychology Coach, allow me to offer a unique and informed style for anyone having difficulties with food, eating, or body image.
